PAGE C1 The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command s New Legion House Will Be CARL DOW Special Feature a Building to Remember 2005 is the Year of the Veteran, and it seems only fitting that The Royal Canadian Legion is embarking this year on the construction of a new national headquarters in Kanata. Scheduled for occupancy in September 2006, the building will reflect the dignity of the Legion, its dedication to assisting veterans, and to promoting remembrance of the sacrifice they have made to keep the true north strong and free. The centre will contain a total of 31,730 square feet of gross floor area and will accommodate Dominion Command executive, administrative, and financial and membership functions, the Service Bureau, supply and distribution of Legion memorabilia and publication of Legion Magazine. In addition to offices, the building will have a Conference Room and a warehouse providing a stocking and packing facility for mail-order retail of Legion memorabilia such as pins and pamphlets to more than 400,000 Legion members. The total construction cost is approximately $4.7 million. There will be no job loss as a result of the transfer, says Brad White, Director of Administration at Dominion Command. All 50 of the employees at the old Kent Street headquarters will be relocated to the new Dominion Command centre in Kanata, to be called Legion House. The new headquarters represents a long process that started last June with approval of the Executive Council. Their approval has been received for each stage of the project, says Mr. White. We ll be moving in next September and will be staying there for the next 50 years. The building and location are the result of the Legion scoring a double bulls-eye when it approached to help them find a place to build a new headquarters to replace the one on Kent Street that the Legion has been using for half-a-century.
PAGE C2 Continued from page C1 Phil Brown of Jackson- Brown says he got a call from Duane Daly, Dominion Secretary of The Royal Canadian Legion, early in 2004. I am listed with the Ottawa Real Estate Board as a realtor specializing in institutional projects. Mr. Daly said he wanted help in finding a good location for the Legion s new national headquarters building. When my partner and I met with Mr. Daly, it soon became clear that we could serve the Legion both as realtors and through our associated planning and development consulting company, Inc. Phil Brown, a Registered Professional Planner, and his partner Joanne Jackson have specialized in acquiring and developing facilities for a wide variety of non-profit and community-service organizations since incorporating in 1989. Both as real estate sales representatives with Coldwell Banker Sarazen Realty and as project managers through Jackson- Brown Inc., we are proud to have the opportunity to assist The Royal Canadian Legion in making a reality of their dream of a new National Headquarters, says Brown. Brown and Jackson agreed to help Daly look for development sites. They found the perfect location at the corner of Aird Place and Castlefrank Road in the new Kanata Town Centre area. Kanata already is a community that is known throughout North America as a high-tech centre. The location of the new Dominion Command of the Royal Canadian Legion brings a strong national focus and will further enhance the national stature of Kanata, says Brown. A key attribute of the site on Aird Place is the newly-completed pedestrian-friendly bridge over the Queensway at Castlefrank Road, which provides convenient access to restaurants, shopping, entertainment and accommodation at a suites hotel, a key requirement for the Legion. The Kanata Holiday Inn will benefit from the fact that Dominion Command books around 400 room nights each year for out-on- Please see page C3. The completed building will have a very positive influence on the area. It will be an important piece of architecture serving as a gateway to the Town Centre, says Brown. Robert Froom of CSV Architects, says the new three storey structure will present a dignified image of the Legion. Named Legion House, it will be natural limestone and brick clad building with a steel structure. Black granite will be used as an accent. Wood and other prestigious interior finishes will reflect the dignity and stature of the Legion. The building will be highlighted with architectural flood lighting. Anthony Leaning of CSV Architects is the architect for the project. The forecourt will be landscaped with five flagpoles and a remembrance courtyard will face the intersection of Aird and Castlefrank.
