Hidden deep in almst impenetrable wdland, with vines and creepers cvering tmbstnes all arund, sme fallen, sme standing, and with tall. trees frming a dense canpy verhead, this is a quiet and peaceful spt. Standing n the muddied pink marble chips that cver the graves yu are aware that generatins f the Chandler family have std shulder t shulder n that same grayel t pay their last respects, and that in due curse thers wuld gather t d the same fr them. They als tuched the plished marble clumn, just as yu will have nw dne. Samuel prvided a place fr his family t gather tgether in death and in life. It is understd that the slid ak cffins are as gd tday as the duy they entered the vsults The marble clumn is apprx. 6 feet tull, and 30 inches square at the base, tapering t 20 inches. It was tpped with a 16 inch rnamental finial that has fallen ff due t the clumn having mved, s that it nw leans frward by abut I inches ff the vertical The ji.nial is nw prpped aguinst the clumn. The tilt frm yerticul is prbably due t rts etc, but is nt yet cnsidered dangerus Hwever, Nreme cautin is urged. It wuld nt be udvisable t stand in frnt f the clumn! It is nt pssible t visit the graves, due t quite understandable health and safety cncerns, unless accampanied und supervised by the staff, There are thusands f grwes ut Nunhead, mst are vetgrwn and nt easy tfind- Massive WArian memrials twer amng the trees; all arund are mnuments standing tilted t craly angles, threatening t tpple ver withut warning. It is wrth remembering that sme af the vaults are almst certainly in a state f cllapse and the grund may literally disappear frm beneath yur feet. While remaining a tranquil and beautiful asis in the heart f Lndn, cmmnsense cautin is necessary. It is a dangerus envirnment t explre unsupervised.
