Total reservoir storage reaches 83% of full capacity With heavy rain lashing the city and its suburbs since Nov. 9, the city reservoirs in Red Hills, Cholavaram, Poondi and Chembarambakkam have registered huge inflows. The storage has reached 9053 million cubit feet (mcft) which is almost 83% of the total capacity of 11057 mcft in the 11 days of rain. The storage in the water bodies, which are the primary sources of city water supply, was abysmally low several months ago for want of rain. On Nov. 8, just a day before the rains started, the storage in the four reservoirs was only 387 million cubic feet (mcft) compared to more than 2587 mcft on the same day last year. After the heavy rains since Nov. 9, the total storage in the four reservoirs increased more than 23-fold to touch 9053 mcft as on Nov. 20 (2979 mcft the same day last year). The maximum inflows in a 24-hour period were on Nov. 15 (1935 mcft) and Nov. 16 (1706 mcft). The inflows were so high on Nov. 15 and 16 that the safety level of Chembarambakkam reservoir was breached which forced the authorities to open the sluices and let the excess water into Adyar River which led to flooding of the colonies on its banks. Poondi has a storage of 2745 mcft as against its full capacity of 3231 mcft (391 mcft on the same day last year); Cholavaram has 625 mcft as against the full capacity of 881 mcft (61 mcft last year); Red Hills has 2415 mcft as against its full capacity of 3300 mcft (1250 mcft last year) and Chembarambakkam has 3268 mcft against its full capacity of 3645 mcft (1267 mcft last year). The two desalination plants also contribute around 200MLD daily. Thulasi Damodhara Kalyanam on Monday Sanjeevini Peetam (5, Kavarai Street, West Mambalam. Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES Torrential rain throws the city and the neighbourhood out of gear The fury of the rain captured through his lens by our staff reporter S. Balachander who braved the flooded streets to bring it to you. A homeless man seemed oblivious to his surroundings as he was seen taking a nap on a bench in Sivan Park Bus Stop (P.T. Rajan Salai) even as the road below him was flooded and the water level was increasing. On the one hand, even as the torrential rains were causing several hardships to the residents, on the other children were found enjoying themselves on the flooded streets by using them as swimming pools and the medians as diving platforms. Several trees toppled over in Bharathidasan Colony as it got inundated. Many families were forced to leave their homes. A couple seen returning home with food items after the water level had started to recede Many victims who were forced out of their flooded homes had to live on food arranged by local civic officials or individuals. Residents design makeshift raft to escape floods Out of desperation, some residents of Sathyamoorthy Block (Jafferkhanpet) made a raft with two air filled rubber tubes tied to a wooden plank to rescue the residents on Nov. 17. They told Mambalam Times that water had started entering the houses in their colony on the midnight of Nov. 16 and no rescue personnel arrived till the forenoon of Nov. 17 which forced them to find a way to do it themselves. TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY M. K. THYAGARAJA BHAGAVATHAR - 5 M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar s fame began to soar with his second film of the year 1937, Ambikapathi. With the success of Sathi Leelavathi, Ellis R. Dungan had arrived as a Director in Tamil films. Bhagavathar, already a star, was cast by him as Ambikapathi and M. R. Santhanalakshmi as Amaravathi. She was already a popular stage actor when she migrated to movies, and this, her first meaty role, elevated her to stardom. Dungan, who did not know Tamil, washowever, resourceful and innovative. He saw in the story parallels with William Shakespeare s immortal play Romeo and Juliet, and decided to incorporate some of the play into the film script. The writer for the film was a Tamil scholar working under his pen name Elangovan. Dungan marked out scenes from Shakespearewhich Elangovan translated into Tamil. One such was the famous balcony scene. The lines as Romeo takes leave of Juliet, Sleep dwell upon thine eyes, peace in thy breast, were translated by Elangovan as Thookkam Un Kangalai Thazhuvattum! Amaithi Un Nenjil Nilavattum! which MKT spoke. This kind of poetic treatment of film dialogue was new to Tamil Cinema and created a sensation. Elangovan set new trends in film dialogue that would have far reaching changes not only in Tamil Cinema but also in the political history of Tamil Nadu. A Bhagavathar film meant melodious music and Ambikapathi was no exception. The songs were penned and composed by Papanasam Sivan. T. S. Balaiah, a stage actor who had come to the silver screen in Sathi Leelavathi, was cast as the villain in this film. A versatile artiste with a remarkable range, he made a splash in Ambikapathi and rose to heights of popularity doing an amazing variety of roles in a successful future career stretching over 30 years. He had a peculiar way of delivering dialogues which endeared him to millions. Serukalathur Sama, the noted singing star and actor, acted as the immortal Tamil poet and maestro Kamban. His hairstyle and beard were inspired by Rabindranath Tagore and suggested by Dungan. Ambikapathi was produced at East India Studio in Calcutta and the main cameraman was Krishna Gopal. A fine technician, KG, as he was familiarly known, later made films on his own, and designed colour film laboratories, including the internationally acclaimed Gemini Colour Lab in Madras. Background music was scored by K. C. Dey, known as the Blind Singer of Bengal who blazed a trail in Indian film music. He also acted in many films as a blind street singer! Dungan invested Ambikapathi with many innovative features besides its classic dialogues. He opened a brave new world in picturising the love scenes of Bhagavathar and Santhanalakshmi, erotically suggestive and boldly intimate. He had Bhagavathar carry his beloved to bed, making the audience gasp with visions of what would follow after the fade out! He also had Bhagavathar wink at his heroine, something unthinkable in those days. Bhagavathar s wink not only became famous but was also regarded as his trade mark. Ambikapathi turned out to be a super hit. Bhagavathar was now a rage and soon would be a cult figure and phenomenon, the first super star in South Indian cinema, a legend in his lifetime! More fame and fortune for M.K.T. Bhagavathar was to follow (To be continued) Differently-abled children trained to handle fireworks The differentlyabled students of Arvind Foundation (387, 27th street, 6th sector, K. K. Nagar) celebrated Deepavali with great fervour. These children, who have sensory issues, usually get scared and mentally disturbed by the sound and bright light of crackers and hence find it difficult to enjoy the festival with their families. Sudha Athmaraji (Co-Founder, Arvind Foundation) said that to overcome this fear, the students were specially trained for a month earlier to handle safe and mild crackers and get accustomed to their sound and light. The significance of the festival and the historical story related to it were also explained to them. The students made their own clay lamps and lit them in their houses at night. Arvind Foundation has centers in Porur, Poonamalle, Chengalpattu and Kodaikanal. Arvind Institute offers vocational training to young adults with learning disability, Dyslexia and who are slow learners. Its contact numbers are 98416 15333 and 98410 34234. Gomathi Sankaran is a resident of Gandhi Street (Paari Street, Jafferkhanpet) which got completely inundated after Adyar River was flooded on Nov. 16. As water started entering the houses and there was no power and potable water, many left with their families to safer locations. But Gomathi and her family had the additional burden of saving not only their pet dog and cat, but also MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 Hit by flood, resident moves pets, kittens to safety Personal from Ashok Nagar Fire & Rescue Station used an inflatable rubber boat to rescue flood victims in Paari Nagar, Vasudevan Nagar, MGR Nagar, Sathya Moorthy Block and nearby areas abutting Adyar River on Nov. 16 and 17. three new born kittens. Gomathi said that all her neighbours had left and she was left alone with her son and her pets. I saw that the water level was rising dangerously, said Gomathi. Seeing the situation worsening, I put the kittens in a bag. Then, with the bag in one hand, I held the cat with the other while my son carried the big dog on his shoulders, she said. We somehow managed to wade through the hip level water and move to safety along with our pets she added. A rubber boat being lowered to rescue flood victims Jyothsna Ravi (resident of Mettupalayam Road, West Mambalam and Std. 12 student of Cambridge Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Saidapet) was felicitated recently by Daasya (an NGO) for giving free Bharatanatyam performances in various temples for the past few years. Jyothsna, who started learning The areas got inundated and water entered the houses after the sluice gates of Chembarambakkam Lake were opened to let out excess water into Adyar River. Water entered most of the houses on the ground floor including Raghavendra Flats. Adding to the woes, water pumped from Postal Colony also entered Water enters houses in Lakshmi Street Lakshmi Street which is at a lower level. The power supply to the houses on the street was affected for more than four days putting the residents to a lot of hardship. After the rains subsided, in spite of several appeals by the residents, the authorities concerned did not take any action to drain the excess water or restore power supply. It took two more days for the water to recede by itself. The power supply has also been intermittent since then. We appeal to the authorities to set right the problems immediately. Lakshmi Street Residents, West Mambalam. Parts of Ashok Nagar, Jafferkhanpet inundated Sir, Like in many places in Chennai, rain played havoc and flooded the streets in 7 th Avenue (Ashok Nagar, Pari Nagar and Gandhi Street (Jafferkhanpet). Water entered the ground floor houses and shops in Gandhi Street. The residents were put to a lot of hardship. The Cooum flowing along Jafferkhanpet looked like a river and submerged the huts constructed on its banks. V. Ramesh Kumar, 7 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar, 97106 80522. Clogged sewage and storm water drains lead to stagnation during rains Sir, Like in many places in Chennai, a number of streets in T. Nagar and West Mambalam witnessed flooding during the recent rains. The worst affected were the ones abutting Usman Road. Rain water entered the compounds of several apartments and also the flats on the ground floor. The primary reason for this is the total negligence of the officials in not regularly cleaning and desilting the sewage and storm water drains. The commercial complexes too play a part in this by dumping their waste, plastic covers and what not into the sewer lines and storm water drains. Though Corporation and Metrowater officials rose to the occasion by lending a helping hand to the residents at this time of crisis, it did not resolve the issues completely. However, the crisis and problems could have been mitigated to a great extent if the storm water drains and the sewer lines had been maintained regularly. Similarly, the Corporation should bring in measures to prevent commercial establishments from littering the storm water drains. T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30 Rangan Street, T. Nagar.
