Each year, Santa Lucia School chooses a theme to build spirit. This year's theme is The Little Engine that Could. The basis of the theme centers on striving for things that may seem difficult but can be achieved if you believe in their possibilities. The student body watched the entertaining video and Miss Maratea read the original book to each of the classes. The students decorated a "little engine" and wrote one goal they wanted to achieve this school year. Many of the school goals and activities this year will emphasize accomplishing these dreams. One of the regular customers at Buffalo Wings and Rings, Nate Esparzam, was challenged to complete the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Nate decided, with a few other customers, to complete his challenge on the outdoor patio of BW&R and film it. In this video, he challenged the GM of BW&R, Justin Bobin, to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and the challenge was accepted. On Thursday, August 28th Justin completed his ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in front of BW&R and then he decided to take it up a notch and challenge the entire staff, facebook fans/twitter followers and The Chevrolet Pride Crew (the high-energy team that interacts with White Sox fans all season long). Since the challenge was posted to so many people, they were given 72 hours to complete the challenge. As a little extra motivation, Peter Balsara from Big Kahuna designed and printed an official I Got Wet at BW&R #ALS Ice Bucket Challenge T-Shirt that would be given away to anyone completing the challenge. Participants were also given coupon cards from BW&R for wings, salads and burgers. As part of the challenge a $10 donation to ALS from all of the participants was requested. As the 72 hour challenge window came to a close, 60% of the BW&R staff complete the challenge along with 30 facebook fans/twitter followers and 11 members of The Chevrolet Pride Crew. During the 3 day long event a total of $710.00 was raised for ALS and a great time was had by all! The Chevrolet Pride Crew accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge. It s Back To School Time at Tilden High School! Tuesday, September 2nd was the first day of school for the 2014-2015 school year at Tilden High School. Principal Maurice Swinney, Assistant Principal Ellen Kennedy and the entire faculty and staff welcomed over 300 students to a new school year. Students looked sharp and crisp in their school uniforms and everyone received a free backpack of school supplies. The Class of 2018 arrived at Tilden for the first time. This year s freshmen class is larger than last year s. On Friday, September 5th students in all grades participated in a mock graduation ceremony to visualize themselves one, two, three, or four years from now becoming a high school graduate. I m so excited for the start of the school year, and even more excited to welcome more families from the neighborhood back to Tilden. Swinney indicates the school is still accepting students for the 2014-2015 school year. We are a neighborhood school and we look forward to seeing all the neighborhood families with us for the upcoming school year. We have great programs to offer and great things to come. Food Drive to Benefit Benton House s Food Pantry and the Bridgeport Community Please join Washington Federal Bank s effort to make a difference in our community. Beginning September 15th to October 26th, 2014 Washington Federal will be hosting a food drive to support Benton House s community food pantry. Benton House is home to our neighborhood s only food pantry. Currently, 15% of residents in Bridgeport are food insecure, meaning that they don t have regular access to safe and nutritious food. The Benton House Food Pantry works hard to meet this need by distributing thousands of pounds of food to over hundreds of families every week. Washington Federal Bank is pleased to be a part of the fight against hunger in our community. You can assist the bank in this drive by donating cans of non perishable food. Some of the recommended items are: canned fruit and vegetables, cereal, chili, jelly, macaroni and cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, rice, soup, stew and tuna. Kindly drop off your donations through October 26th at either one of our locations. We are located in the Bridgeport area at 2869 S. Archer Avenue or in the Taylor Street area at 1410 W. Taylor St. Thank you for helping to make a difference in our community! - Page 3 Editorial Deadline is Friday at Noon MWRD Is Available to Help Reduce Phosphorus Levels in Wastewater Commissioner Cynthia Santos, Chairman of the Labor and Industrial Relations committee of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago announced that the MWRD is available to help commercial, industrial partners reduce phosphorus levels in wastewater. Phosphorus is a non-renewable resource needed for life to exist. However, too much in the environment can impair water quality and harm aquatic life. To meet new phosphorus limits, the MWRD is assisting industrial users in reducing phosphorus from their waste streams while at the same time implementing plans to recover this sustainable resource. Santos stated In addition to providing technical assistance with managing internal processes, MWRD staff can help organizations identify how they may be able to divert their high-strength waste phosphorus to a new recovery system that will be constructed at the Stickney WRP next year. The new facility will be the largest phosphorus recovery facility in the world, generating a magnesium ammonium phosphate slow release fertilizer product. The process will transform phosphorus and nitrogen recovered from municipal and industrial wastewater into a high-value, eco-friendly fertilizer. Commissioner Santos concluded by saying, We believe that this public-private partnership will ultimately result in lower phosphorus concentrations in the wastewater and in our aquatic environment. We also believe that industries can expect to lower their operating costs. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
