St. Barbara and Big Shoulders St. Barbara School was invited by the Big Shoulders Fund to participate in a week-long science adventure week in Brush Creek, Wyoming. Big Shoulders is an organization founded by Cardinal Bernardin and comprised of donors who support Catholic education in the City of Chicago. In addition to trips to Wyoming, the STEM program and various academic programs for schools and teachers, the organization funds hundreds of scholarships for Catholic school students in the city. This is the third year that the school was invited to participate. Sixth and seventh grade students are invited to apply and must submit a variety of essays to be eligible. All expenses were paid by Big Shoulders. This year, six students were chosen to participate. Ashley Staszak, Mia Perez, Jack Murrihy, Luis Castaneda, Leonardo Jimenez and Charlyn Benjamin were accompanied by upper grade teacher, Sarah Eur on the week-long trip. Luis Castaneda and Leonardo Jimenez met a new friend in Wyoming. The students were introduced to the beauty of the natural wonders of Wyoming. The closest airport was Denver and then it was a three hour bus ride to their destination. The week included science classes, journaling and just enjoying the great outdoors. The students conducted various science labs focusing on environmental issues of the area and learned about the animals and habitats of Wyoming. They also worked on team projects with students from other Catholic schools. Rock climbing, zip lining, horse-back riding and hiking rounded out the week. A huge thank you to Big Shoulders for giving the students this remarkable opportunity. We hope St. Barbara School is chosen again this year. Beginning with the 2017-2018 school year, De La Salle Institute will merge its two campuses to become a co-educational high school. In 2002, De La Salle became one of two co-institutional schools in the nation when it established its Lourdes Hall Campus for young women. Based on recent stakeholder survey results, however, the singlesex educational environment is no longer the reason that parents choose De La Salle Institute for their children. Our transformation to a co-educational curriculum is an historic achievement for our school, De La Salle president Fr. Paul Novak, OSM, said. We have long been at the forefront of educational innovation, whether it was becoming a co-institutional school in 2002, or becoming the first school in Chicago to implement a one-to-one Tablet PC program and curriculum for our students in 2006. We are very excited about the multitude of benefits that becoming a co-educational high school will bring to the De La Salle and Chicagoland communities. Located at 3434 So. Michigan, De La Salle has continued to serve the Chicagoland area since 1889. De La Salle is accessible through its own bus service as well as public transportation including the CTA s Green and Red Lines as well as Metra service at the 35th Street station. In its 126 years of existence, De La Salle has graduated over 10,000 students with five former Chicago mayors among its distinguished alumni. Our school provides an outstanding, Catholic,, college-preparatory education to the young women and men of Chicago, Fr. Novak said. Our faculty and staff do an exemplary job in preparing our students for their great futures, whether our graduates attend the top colleges and universities in the country, serve in the military or contribute to the workforce. Ninety-six percent of De La Salle alumni matriculate on to college. By becoming a co-educational high school, De La Salle will continue to experience significant growth while providing many opportunities for current and future scholars in a one-campus setting. THE Cherrie Moraga Tips to Supplement Kids Learning at Home (StatePoint) There s no reason that learning should stop once the bell rings. When concepts are reinforced at home, not only do children learn faster, they are better prepared to excel in school. Whether your children are in preschool or are already in grade school, there are many bright ideas out there that can give kids an extra academic edge: Explore Your World Your world is a classroom that can provide an abundance of lesson plans. Start in your own home by exploring key concepts around the house. From using measuring cups in the kitchen to identifying shapes in the playroom, there are lessons to be learned in every room. The new Get Ready for School series by DK includes I m Ready for School, an interactive book that helps toddlers practice colors, numbers and more. Proceeds from the book series support PBS KIDS, which uses the power of media to help prepare children for success in school and in life. Once you ve mastered the house, take the show on the road. Visit museums, the aquarium or even the park around the block for learning opportunities. Play Games Encourage the idea that learning is fun by introducing educational games into your child s daily routine. Games are a great way to make lessons stick and help a child grasp new ideas. Check out Get Ready for School Games: Number Memory, a math card game that show numbers 1-10 arranged in set order with everyday objects and number words to help toddlers practice adding and taking away up to 10, sharing, and grouping. It s an easy-tounderstand visual approach to real-life problem-solving. A companion game, Color Match, introduces kids to words and colors with timed memory challenges and activities. Also consider The Incredible Math Games Book, which blurs the lines between practicing math and play. With interactive games like Find the Fraction, Subtraction Action, and Dancing Dice, kids can learn key math concepts minus the homework. Write a Story Help your budding writer find her literary voice by encouraging her to write fictional stories or report on news events from around the neighborhood for the house newspaper. Make sure she is well-equipped to handle her writing assignments with the help of a classic reference tool, DK s Merriam-Webster Children s Dictionary -- now updated and revised to include modern words like smartphone, MP3 and graphic novel, as well as new countries, borders, flags and cities. Music Lessons Round out your child s education with music lessons, which can improve motor skills, build self-confidence and help impart cultural values. Many music stores rent instruments, which can be a low commitment way to test out your child s interest. Check out options for lessons in your area or even just find free tutorials online. When the school day is over, don t let young minds go on strike. Through activities, music and even games, you can make stress-free learning happen round-theclock. There is a perennial nobleness and even sacredness in work...were he ever so benighted and forgetful of his calling, there is always hope in a man who actually and earnestly works. October 3rd, 1962 The value of history is, indeed, not scientific but moral: by liberalizing the mind, by deepening the sympathies, by fortifying the will, it enables us to control, not society, but ourselves- a much more important thing; it prepares us to live more humanely in the present and to meet rather than foretell the future. Carl Becker Neighborhood Kitchen Recipe Meatball Soup 1 lb. ground chuck 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. garlic salt 1/4 tsp. ground cumin 1 small onion, finely diced 1/2 C. uncooked rice 1/2 C. dry bread crumbs 1 egg, beaten 4 cans (10.5 oz.) beef broth 1 can (4 oz.) tomato sauce 1 bay leaf 1 C. chopped carrots 1 C. chopped celery Mix together chuck, salt, garlic salt, cumin, onion, rice, bread crumbs and egg. Shape into 1 (or smaller) meatballs. Pour into 4 qt. pan beef broth, tomato sauce, bay leaf carrots, celery. Cover and bring to a boil. Add meatballs, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 45 min. more.
