BEGA Nightgeist 2011/2012 season review
BEGA Nightgeist series The best way to appreciate the quality of any luminaire or lighting design is not through a datasheet or lighting calculation but by taking a hands on approach to how the luminaires look and feel in real applications. Over the last six months the Zumtobel Lighting team has toured the UK hosting a series of BEGA Workshops at iconic locations in an attempt to help inspire all lighting enthusiasts, whilst at the same time having some fun. The winning team from each event were then asked to attend the grand final at the Royal Albert Hall in April with the champions receiving a trip to Berlin to the Festival of Lights. This supplement is to show some of the highlights of the Nightgeist tour and thank all those who took the time to participate. 2 BEGA Nightgeist series
It was a fantastic experience, getting to experiment and play with all the different types of lights and filters and to meet and collaborate with so many professionals and at the end it was quite astonishing to see how light can transform space in so many different ways Isabel Garriga, Holmes Miller Partnership London: RIBA HQ Manchester: Manchester Cathedral Southampton: Fort Nelson BEGA Nightgeist series 3
BEGA Nightgeist series The Nightgeist series of workshops allowed us to effectively play with a selection of the luminaires and sources and see the results immediately. I believe that this experimental and intuitive approach achieves the best results and should be used more often. Nothing beats the hands on experience of trying different types of lighting fittings in situ, with their various beam types, colour temperatures, and gels, to see how lighting can significantly alter the ambiance of a space. I thoroughly enjoyed both evenings, and thanks to Zumtobel and BEGA for organising such entertaining and informative evenings Brian McAnoy, Povall Worthington Liverpool: Liverpool Cathedral Belfast: Queen s University Cardiff: Cardiff City Hall BEGA Nightgeist series 5
BEGA Nightgeist series The Final Zumtobel were pleased to announce that the Nightgeist Grand Final was to take place at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall. To try and make the evening as fair as possible an independent panel comprising Tony Rimmer of Studio-29, Sarah Ridout of SLR design and Ben Cronin of Lighting magazine judged the event. As expected the standard was extremely high and after much consultation, deliberation and hesitation, the winner was chosen as Liverpool with the London team of Terry Farrell and Partners coming in a close second. Winners: Alison Doran, Bernard Brian McAnoy, Clare Wrigley, Mark Yates, Rachel Atkinson and Tony Eastwood The WINNER 6 BEGA Nightgeist series
Thanks from us all at Terry Farrells for a great event. We thoroughly enjoyed being able to light such a superb venue Elizabeth Makinson, Terry Farrell & Partners SECOND It was a breath of fresh air to see creative people being thrown a handful of lights and only 45 minutes to come up with a solution to their allocated area. Not many of these had a formal lighting education so their ideas were not influenced by previous experiences, which made the results even more exciting Tony Rimmer, Studio-29 Other notable pics BEGA Nightgeist series 7
