Generation 9 (con't) In 1850, William Brashears of Spartanburg County, SC deeded 100 acres on Motlow's Creek (This creek flows some two miles north of the present Holly Springs Baptist Church) to"...my daughter Tabitha Pettit of the State of Georgia..." (Spartanburg Deed Book DD, p 293). At this time Tabitha Pettit lived in Old Cherokee, later Milton County Georgia on 40 acres she had purchased in Dec 1845 (Cherokee County Deed Book H, p 511). Her household in the 1850s census of then Cherokee County GA, included two unmarried daughters and two young sons (1805 Census, Cherokee County, GA p 507). Tabitha Pettit had asked for a letter of dismission from Goshen Baptist Church in Dec 1845 (Goshen Church minutes). When 1860s census was taken, Tabitha had moverd back to what had become Dawson County. Her household, which included one of the unmarried daughters, Teresa, and one unmarried son, Joshua, counted in the earlier census of 1850, was next door (in 1860) to that of Elias Pettit. She also had joined Goshen Church (1860 Census, Dawson County, Georgia, page 36; and Goshen Church minutes). Elias Pettit's nfamily which by then included 12 year old Christopher Columbus Pettit and a young daughter named Tabitha. At the close of the war between the States, Tabitha Pettit, the unmarried Teresa, and the newly married Joshua Pettett moved to Etowah County Alabama. Tabitha lived near or with her married daughter Sarah Jane Pettett. (Mrs. Joseph Clayton) for the rest of her life. (Etowah County AL Census, p 201-L). In February 1879, Elias traveled back to Spartanburg County SC where, as "Attorney for the heirs of Tabitha Pettit," he sold Tabitha's Motlow Creek property to Caroline Harris. (Spartanburg Deedbook 00, pages 799-800). Photo of her headstone is in my possession as is the deed from Spartanburg SC re the sale of the Motlow's Creek property. Notes for Elijah Pettett: It appears likely that Elijah's father was one of Joshua Pettett/Pettit's sons, (Spartanburg SC); however, further research will be necessary. These sons were in the Confederacy: Jasper who later gave the oath to the Union Decatur Richard My Father told me that Elias was wounded and was at home in the front yard recovering, when a group of Home Guard came riding up and said they wanted his mule. Elias begged them not to take him, only animal they had left. Perry Grogan, who was brother of Elias' deceased wife, Mary Jane, ordered one of the men to get on mule at which time the mule bucked him off, Perry Grogan shot and killed the mule. My father, Philip Pettett, had met Jasper Pettett, said he had a long white beard. After the war, Jasper stayed in Ohio for awhile and he and his family made their way back to Georgia. Said some of his kin and others never forgave him for taking the oath. Said maybe he should have stayed in Ohio, they may have had a better life.
