Box 164 FERNTREE GULLY, VIC 3156 17th October, 2011 WEEKLY BULLETIN Chairman Mike facilitates questions from the floor. Barry Mitchell was certainly both interesting and informative when it came to talking about Melbourne s Jazz Archives Fellowship, and Camaraderie Service to the Community Support of Each Other Reach Within to Embrace Humanity President, Rotary International - KALYAN BANERJEE, & Binota, Rotary Club of Vapi, India District Governor, Dist. 9810 JULIET RISELEY & Ian, Rotary Club of Hampton President, Rotary Club of Fern Tree Gully ENID HUGHES Benefactor, Rotary Club of Fern Tree Gully IVAN GIGOVIC, Vale: August 2003 Rotary's early emblem was a simple wagon wheel (in motion with dust). It was designed in 1905 by Montague M. Bear, a member of the Rotary Club of Chicago who was an engraver. He designed the emblem to represent both civilization and movement. Most of the early Rotary clubs adopted the wheel in one form or another. The present emblem, 24 cogs and six spokes, was adopted in 1924. A keyway was added to signify usefulness. An official description of the emblem was adopted at the 1929 International Convention. ROTARY GRACE: For good food, fellowship and the opportunity of service through Rotary. We thank Thee O Lord. A ROTARY TOAST: Rotarians and friends please join me in a toast Rotary and Australia. 12

Truisms, One-liners and Witticisms Never try to teach a pig to sing - it wastes your time and annoys the pig. Never go to Dudley. It's not the end of the world, but you can see it from there. Dog owners! Your monstrously large hound is not more afraid of me than I am of it. The trick is to find the right man in the right pub. Never pretend you can horse-ride. People who say, 'I'm beside myself, 'are often mistaken; with the notable exception of time travellers and Siamese twins. If you can't believe it's not butter, you're an idiot. Cats know more than they let on. Beginning a sentence, 'Now, don't get angry...' will always have the reverse effect. Nobody has ever read the small print of a mobile-phone insurance contract. You can't skip and be unhappy at the same time. There are two theories to arguing with women. Neither works. Too many cooks spoil the TV schedules. Never ever mix sleeping pills and laxatives. Nothing productive can come from just nipping in for a quick pint at two in the afternoon. There's nothing you could wish for in life that you couldn't buy from a man in a pub. You can live your life through a computer. Lenny Henry isn't very funny. Sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit... but it's still funny. 4 9

Other Reports: Merv Lincoln announced he and his wife Annette had been advised they were being transferred to another Salvation Army posting at the end of the year and would be strongly recommending his replacement to join RC of FTG. Details of his placement are not yet available. Graham Faualkner showed a DVD detailing how to deal with a heart attack and then verbally outlined the main points. Sergeant-at-Arms (Helen Lingard) Helen informed us all about the lesser known facts of married life! (Drew a few knowing laughs!) Skill: President Enid drew the 4 of Hearts. Program: Jazz Archive Barry Mitchell. Barry spoke at length about the Australian Jazz Archives: 1995 Victorian Jazz community were concerned about the preservation of their library. Melbourne (is about to be) the Australian Jazz capital. 1996 Meetings of the jazz fraternity held to form the Jazz Archives. 1997 Negotiated a lease with MMBW for use as a museum with funding from State Government and a number of Trusts. 2000 Accredited as a museum until 2014 by Museums Australia Progressively, the museum has been developed to include a number of new areas/ rooms and is now a good location for the Jazz Experience. Renovations continue. The Archives house over 70 volunteers (mostly retired people) working over 15000 hours each year. Open to the public 10:00 4:00 weekdays and entry is free. Check the website: vicjazzarchive.org.au Barry showed a short DVD covering a segment of ABC s Collectors. The collection is sourced from collectors/deceased estates etc. and includes 17,000 items. Cost of membership is $40 per year (individual); CD s sell for $25 and there is a large selection of original tracks available. President Enid thanked all concerned,. She then read out the birthdays and housekeeping duties before closing the meeting. ZAK S Adventures in Sweden 8 Meeting closed at 8:55 pm Scribe: Phil Walters 5

Hi Everyone: PRESIDENT S REPORT VICTORIA DOCK (Central Pier) more than a hundred years ago... Well you can see from the pictures on the opposite page we re in for a great conference! Having driven ourselves to the Village Green Hotel Helen and I together with everyone else were then transported by bus first to the National Gallery where, we were informed, we would be celebrating our Saturday night Gala Dinner, in the Great Hall no less! Then it was on to Docklands where we duly inspected Shed 9 now known as The Peninsula Conference Centre. I have to say that the transformation is stupendous. When Atlantic Group took them over the sheds were roofless and with sagging walls. They have spend multi millions of dollars bringing them up to what they are today. Peninsula s design was inspired by London s iconic Tate Modern Museum and features nine metre high ceilings, exposed trusses and huge floor to ceiling windows flanked by the original loading doors of the shed. It has a contemporary colour palette of black, white and grey and includes a stunning 66-metre crystal chandelier streaking along one side of the room. (OK, so I m quoting from the brochure, but it s true!) We were shown the Sumac room which is where the traditional Friendship area will be although because it s not quite as spacious as we have had in the past, club projects will be limited. Sumac s decor is Moroccan influenced and includes among other things dark wooden hand etched floorboards. Morning tea was served in the Woolshed Pub which is also part of the complex. Question and answer time followed before the morning was wound up with another bus trip back to the Village Green. Docklands (Victoria Dock just in front of the Etihad Stadium) - today 2012 District conference this is it! Helen & the bus Helen and I agreed it was a morning well spent. Enid Hughes President Gala Dinner Pre-dinner drinks CLUB NOTICES: No club notices watch this space though! The famous chandalier 6 Peninsula Room 7
