TECHNICAL DETAILS LOCATION The first ruler of the territory were nobles from Quona, its domination is documented by the XIth century. They allocated in Florence in the end of XIIth century and in the 1207 sold to the Florentine episcopate the territory of their jurisdiction. In the 1375 Florence decreed the building of Castel Sant angelo castle in the Pontassieve ground. In the 1399, for increasing the importance of the new settlement a weekly street market was permitted. Then the name of Castel Sant Angelo took the upper hand that of Ponte a Sieve, thanks to the importance of the bridge that was useful for the passage for the ancient road that led Florence to Mugello, Casentino and Arezzo. Around the bridge rose the first houses, becoming a village placed at the foot of the castle built by inhabitants of Florence. The village developed in the end of XVIIIth century, when the new streets, for the Casentino and Romagna, were opened. In that period Pontassieve increased in short time and a new impulse received in the 1859 with the building of Firenze-Roma railway. During the last war Pontassieve underwent huge damages, for the importance of its railway junction, remaining completely destroyed. The present look is due to the after war reconstruction.
