The Land Tr ust, for med in 2000, has acquir ed over 1000 acr es valued at over $50MM, the biggest tr act being Cannon's Point follow ed by the Musgr ove pr oper ty. He gave us member ship statistics along w ith answ er ing questions about acquisitions and other inter est facts. He said the Land Tr ust has been in "acquisition" mode up until r ecently, w her eas now it w ill be mor e in maintenance and management oper ation. He was thr illed over the r ecent Land Tr ust Oyster Roast w hich boasted mor e than 1200 attendees. We ar e tr uly blessed to have an or ganization that is watching over our natur al habitat that w e have in abundance her e on St. Simons and hopefully w ill be kept that way. She pr eviously ser ved as pr esident of Young Har r is College and Geor gia?s secr etar y of state. A 1986 magna cum laude gr aduate of Mer cer Law School, Cox is the fir st alumna to lead the School? other than on an inter im basis? since William Augustus Bootle, w ho was dean fr om 1933 to 1937. Cox ser ved as the 21st pr esident of Young Har r is fr om 2007 to 2017, leading its tr ansition fr om a tw o-year college to a four -year institution and over seeing unpr ecedented gr ow th. Pr ior to assuming the Young Har r is pr esidency, Cox ser ved tw o ter ms as Geor gia?s secr etar y of state, and was the fir st w oman in the state?s histor y to be elected to the post, fir st in 1998 and again in 2002. As secr etar y of state, she moved the lar gest division of her office fr om Atlanta to Macon and instituted a univer sal electr onic voting system to impr ove the accur acy of the state?s elections, making Geor gia the fir st Amer ican state to do so. A native of Bainbr idge, Cox began her political car eer as a member of the Geor gia House of Repr esentatives, w her e fr om 1993 to 1996 she r epr esented Miller, Seminole, Ear ly and Decatur counties. Befor e being elected secr etar y of state, she ser ved for tw o year s as assistant secr etar y of state. She has r emained an active member of the State Bar of Geor gia, and, in 2011, was pr esented w ith the Tr aditions of Excellence Awar d for Gener al Pr actice by the State Bar?s Gener al Pr actice and Tr ial Section. Cox was a new spaper r epor ter for thr ee year s befor e enter ing law school, w or king for The Times in Gainesville and The Post-Sear chlight in Bainbr idge. She ear ned a degr ee in jour nalism, summa cum laude, fr om the Univer sity of Geor gia in 1980 and is a 2013 inductee to the Gr ady College of Jour nalism and Mass Communication?s Gr ady Fellow ship. In the spr ing of 2007, she held the Car l E. Sander s Political Leader ship Chair at the Univer sity of Geor gia School of Law. Cox also holds an associate?s degr ee in agr icultur e fr om Abr aham Baldw in Agr icultur al College in Tifton. After gr aduating fr om Mer cer Law School, w her e she was editor -in-chief of the Mer cer Law Review and a member of the Br ainer d Cur r ie Honor Society, Cox pr acticed law full-time for 10 year s in Atlanta and Bainbr idge. A for mer member of the Mer cer Boar d of Tr ustees, the Mer cer Law School?s Boar d of Visitor s, and the Wesleyan College Boar d of Tr ustees, Cox was awar ded an honor ar y Doctor of Law s degr ee fr om Mer cer in 2007.
