MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate Release March 12, 2010 Marvyn Baker and Terry Courtney 2009 REALTORS Care Award Recipients for the Central Okanagan Kelowna, BC Recognized for their exemplary volunteer efforts on a local and international level, Marvyn Baker and Terry Courtney from Royal LePage Kelowna are the 2009 recipients of the REALTORS Care Awards for the Central Okanagan Zone of the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board (OMREB). Many REALTORS give of their time, money and expertise, and OMREB annually recognizes the volunteer efforts of its members through REALTORS Care awards. The 2009 presentations were made to Baker and Courtney at the Central Zone s annual Christmas luncheon in December, and Board-wide recognition came at OMREB s AGM on March 9 th. Marvyn Baker is very worthy of this award, and is being honoured for his exceptional local volunteer efforts spanning close to 40 years. He has given countless hours of his time to make Kelowna a better place to live, work and play, noted OMREB Past President Bob Cliffe at the AGM. Locally, Marvyn helped build the Knox Mountain Trail and worked with fellow Rotarians to raise more than $1,000,000 for an accommodation centre for the family members of cancer patients at the Cancer Lodge. He acted as Team Captain for the Heart and Stroke Big Bike Ride, and has assisted with the Salvation Army s Fill the Van and Christmas Kettle programs. Actively involved with Rotary since 1971, he has volunteered with many worthwhile community and international projects. Terry Courtney s outstanding volunteer work outside of the Okanagan and Canada earned him this very worthy recognition. He and his wife Janet have impacted hundreds of Manzanillo residents and people in the surrounding villages -- each and every year, Cliffe said. Their ongoing efforts have significantly improved the lives of many families and given their children hope for a better future. On their own initiative, with their own money, and with funds raised from family and friends, the Courtneys have trekked south to Manzanillo, Mexico each winter to help people in need for the last five years. They have worked with other volunteers to build homes for families in the community who are in desperate need of shelter and assistance. Together, they also created large feeding and teaching programs for schools and orphanages in the surrounding area. REALTORS are good public citizens, notes Janice Myers, Executive Director of the Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board. They care about the communities that they live and work in, and the world around them. I am always amazed at all the ways REALTORS give back, the leadership they take and the good example they set for others. As the Okanagan moves towards economic recovery in 2010, local REALTORS look forward to continued involvement in their communities. -30- For more information: Brenda Moshansky, OMREB President (250) 860-7500 bmoshansky@coldwellbanker.ca Jan Bauman, Communications (250) 491-4560 jbauman@omreb.com
