BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB A Late Summer Escape Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, I am delighted to invite you on an end-of-summer escape to the in Western Massachusetts. This picturesque part of New England, where I spent my undergraduate years at Williams College, has over 100 museums and cultural attractions, many of which we will see on custom arranged visits. Together we ll enjoy special access to museums in Stockbridge, Lenox, Williamstown, and North Adams; go behind the scenes at Williams College and its art museum, with collections spanning three millennia; and visit Tanglewood, which will have closed for the season, for an exclusive performance and lunch. As a specialist in American paintings and sculpture, I am especially looking forward to introducing you to Chesterwood, the summer home and studio of the sculptor Daniel Chester French. French, best known for his work on the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C, was also a long-time trustee of The Met. Our visit includes a special welcome reception on the studio porch, offering magnificent views of nearby Monument Mountain, where Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne once picnicked together. Nearby is the Norman Rockwell Museum featuring the works of one of America s most-admired painters and illustrators, as well as The Mount, the country house of the celebrated author Edith Wharton. Other pleasures await: a before-hours tour of Hancock Shaker Village, with a circular stone barn that embodies the simplicity and ingenuity of Shaker design; curator-guided visits to The Clark and MASS MoCA; and five nights at the just-renovated Cranwell Resort, a hilltop Tudor-style mansion whose grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. I hope you will join us for this exquisite experience. Sincerely, Thayer Tolles Marica F. In 1853, the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher, brother of author and abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, purchased the hillside where the property now stands, later leaving it to his sister. After various owners, the land was eventually bought by John Sloane, a wealthy furniture maker and interior decorator whose clients included the White House and The Breakers. Sloane built the current Tudor-style mansion in 1894 and commissioned Frederick Law Olmsted to design the grounds. When President William McKinley was a guest of Sloane s, he reportedly proclaimed the view of the to be the most enchanting I ve ever had. Today this refined resort, which will be renovated by the summer of 2019, has amenities that include a spa, indoor/outdoor pools, restaurant, café, tavern, and golf course.
