photo: Arno de la Chapelle Viikki Church Agronominkatu 5 00790 Viikki has recently seen a revival of timber architecture in churches A new addition to this genre is the Viikki Church, distinguished by the quality of its interiors, atmosphere and details On the outside, the upper part of the building housing the church spaces, is clad with thick aspen shingles which will turn grey over time The only indication of its religious identity is a stubby belltower and slender, barely noticeable metal cross The lower, recreational section is generously windowed and clad with boards The most exciting internal spaces are of course the religious ones which can be combined by opening the sliding doors dividing them The church halls have windows about 2m high overlooking the landscape and a small garden, but the overall appearance, appropriately for a space of worship, is closed and inward-looking The most striking features of these spaces are the wall construction and the ceiling, vaguely reminiscing Nordic Christmas decorations made of straw 2005 Artist JKMM s Antti Tanttu Parish of Helsinki Tarja_Nurmi http://wwwmimoaeu/users/egb/guides/finlandia/ 4

Klaukkala Church Ylitilantie 6 01800 Klaukkala The project is based on the winning entry for an open competition organized by the parish of Nurmijärvi The proposal transforms the existing community centre into a cloister-like structure The building stands out in its compact mass, clad in copper The brick facades of the existing building are plastered in an intense red colour opposing the dark reddish and greenish patina of the copper of the church facades White and bright interiors, with wooden ceilings and movable panels, contrast to the almost monolithic appearance of the exterior The nave is bathed in light from strip-like windows cutting the concrete walls and ceiling The building serves multiple functions In addition to the church nave, there is a columbarium, a day-care centre, a youth centre and a meeting place, office spaces and rooms for priests and social workers to meet with members of the community In summer, the inner courtyard can be used as an outdoor church or stage for events Floor area/size 2004 2200 m² OOPEAA - Office for Peripheral ure Parish of Nurmijärvi OOPEAA http://wwwmimoaeu/users/egb/guides/finlandia/ 6
