2 A feasibility study for the Construction of the Japanese Consulate in Karachi carried out in association of the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. Extensive research was undertaken to evaluate the urban and architectural potentialities and constraints of the proposed site. Preparation of Structure Plan 2002-2020 for Peshawar, undertaken as a consultant to the Engineering firm ECIL, Karachi Research and Published Book on Rehabilitation of Hawkers and Revitalisation of Saddar Area in Karachi, carried out for Asian Coalition for Housing Rights, Bangkok. Research and Published Monograph on, Understanding Asian Cities. A study undertaken in 09 Asian cities for the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights (ACHR), based in Thailand. June 2000 to date; Department of Architecture & Planning NED University of Engineering & Technology, Karachi Current Status: Associate Professor, Coordinator Urban Research and Design Group (URDC), Advisor Design Studio Group (DSG) Conducting courses of; Housing and Community, Comprehensive Environmental Design (CED), Architectural Design Studio. Initiator and Co-ordinator of the EU funded Asia Link programme 2004-2007. A collaborative project with KU Leuven, University of Eindhoven, DAP- Moratowa University Sri Lanka and CEPT university, Ahmadabad, India. The research focused on impacts of Mega projects on cities, feeding into curriculum development and faculty training. The project has been successfully completed with 05 publications. Initiator and Co-ordinator of the Urban Research and Design Cell 2005 to date. Urban Research and Design Cell (URDC) was setup in 2005 by a group of academics, architects and associated professionals. It aims to consolidate and promote urban research, design and related advocacy activities bridging the gap between academics and practice initiating a new urban development and design thinking. It also aims to promote urban design as a recognized profession in Pakistan. It holds regular seminars, workshops and trainings creating a space for debate and discussion. All data created is disseminated as advocacy materials, websites and publications. Initiator and Advisor of the Design Studio Group (DSG) 2007 to date. Design Studio forms the backbone of architecture studios. It provides that place for expression where knowledge gained via other related courses and experience is exercised and translated into architectural designs by the students. After 07 years of the formation of DAP-NED and a growing number of students, the faculty engaged in the design studio teaching felt the dire need to take stock of the past experiences, share issues faced and lessons learnt and discuss future strategies in order to be able to improve upon the current teaching practice. The formation and running of this group is hoped to support the process of design studio teaching resulting in a better utilization of resources, knowledge gained and development of the subject curriculum. 2

3 Aug - Dec 99 : Arif Hasan & Associates, Karachi Architecture Working as an associate with Architect/Planner Arif Hasan, the following work was undertaken independently. Supervision of construction work for Institute of Labour Education and Research (PILER) at Gulshan-e- Maymar, Karachi. Design and Construction Supervision of ongoing residences As an independent consultant was involved in the preparation of: An evaluation of the Young Professionals Training Programmes being run at DCET, URC and OPP- RTI for the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights, (ACHR), based in Bangkok. Feb - June 99 : Post Graduate Centre for Human Settlements (PGCHS), Katholieke Universiteit, Leuven, Belgium Visiting scholar and research assistant to Prof.dr.Han Verschure, faculty member ASRO-KU Leuven. Following activities were undertaken in the time period spent in Leuven: Jointly compiled and edited with Prof Han Verschure, the final document on "Urban Poverty Alleviation - Policy Orientation" for the Belgian Development Co-operation (BADC-VLIR), Belgium Jointly prepared with Prof Han Verschure, a project proposal, "Follow up on Urban Poverty Alleviation (BVO 97-98), towards implementing guidelines and training initiatives for Development Co-operation with governmental and non governmental organisations " Formulation of a Ph.D. proposal under the guidance of Prof. Han Verschure. Mar 98 Jan 99 ------ Arif Hasan & Associates, Karachi Architecture Resumption of activities as an associate undertaking architectural, planning and development projects independently. Interior Design and Supervision of Renovation of Haider Motta / Kazim Hasan, firm of lawyers and solicitors at Kashif Center, Shahra-e-Faisal. Design and Construction Supervision of ongoing residences As an independent consultant was involved in the preparation of the following studies and projects; Preparation of case studies for the Water Aid supported sanitation projects in Pakistan for Water Aid, UK. Work included monitoring the projects, corresponding and acting as an intermediary between the donor and the NGO, evaluation of quarterly progress, preparation of report and follow-up on the feedback. The work of Anjuman Samaji Behbood and the larger Faisalabad context, a report on a community initiative for the Water Aid, U.K The focus of the study is to understand the potential and importance of the community initiatives in city development. Groundwork for a book Working with the Communities published as a sequel to Arif Hasan s Working with the Government. The focus of the study was to understand the potential and importance of the community initiatives in city development. The lessons learnt are drawn from the OPP s experience with communities involved in replicating its low cost sanitation model. The recommendations are expected to result in better NGO and informal sector collaborations in the future. Co-authored a paper, Urban Poverty Alleviation - Policy Orientation prepared for the Belgium Development Cooperation (BADC), September 1998. The paper briefly defines pain priority aspects related to urban poverty and its alleviation, identifying selectively policy orientation of donor countries or agencies, NGOs and CBOs, which have explicit 3

4 experience in poverty alleviation. Summaries of project and programmes, which have illustrated successful strategies and implementation achievements, have also been included for formulating future policies. Dec 96 - Sep 97: Research in association with the PGCHS- K.U. Leuven as part of the Masters Thesis Research conducted in collaboration with a team of international students and experts for developing for alternatives for ''An urban park for Essaouira, (Morocco). An urban design investigation into the edge definition of a medium-sized city.'' This study was a part of an ongoing research under the project 'Localising Agenda 21' within the framework of UNCHS -PGCHS. Mar 94 Aug 96 : Arif Hasan & Associates, Karachi Architecture and Town Planning As an architect working directly under Architect and Planner Arif Hasan assisted in the following design projects: Housing Scheme in Rakhni for the Balochistan Rural Support Programme s (BRSP) This project for a housing scheme was attempting towards a revival of the stone building technology, responding to the socio-cultural, economic and technical context of rural Balochistan, promoting traditional methods of construction accommodating modern living and working environment. Designing, preparation of working drawing and supervision of works for several residential and interior design projects. Simultaneously, assisted Arif Hasan in the preparation of the following studies and reports: Mapping City Inequality Study: Case of Karachi, for IIED, London The Study analyses the planned and unplanned areas of Karachi in relation to their demographic, housing, economic, social and physical infrastructure determining the levels of inequality and resultant environmental repercussions. Working with Government : The story of OPP s collaboration with state agencies for replicating its low cost sanitation programme, Karachi The book analyses OPP s relationship with the government agencies it has been working with for replicating its low cost sanitation model. The problems encountered by the OPP and the constraints of the government agencies are highlighted through elaborate case studies drawing lessons for future work. The Environmental Repercussions of the Karachi Mass Transit Programme (KMTP) and alternatives for the Government/World Bank proposal; for the Concerned Citizen's Forum, Karachi The study was pursued in conjunction with the "Concerned Citizen's Forum" organised by the Urban Resource Centre (URC). It investigated the ignored socio-economic and physical repercussions of the KMTP on the Old City fabric and residents. Alternative plans to the government proposal were presented to the concerned agencies, communities and professionals. The movement was successful in attaining the government's attention and resulted in modification of plans. Preparation of case studies for Four Community Based Urban Development Initiatives in Pakistan; for the IIED, UK The focus of the study was on understanding the potential of the formal and informal institutional mechanisms, highlighting the actors and processes involved. Lessons learnt have been used to formulate recommendations for community development. Faisalabad Infrastructure Upgrading Project, Faisalabad, for IIED, London. Scaling Up of the Orangi Pilot Project's Low Cost Sanitation Programme, OPP-RTI, Karachi Preparation of historical data maps on Karachi for office use. 5 During studies worked as a part time intern. 4.0 Associated with: Mar 98 - Dec 98: Young Professionals Training Unit (YPTU), Department of Architecture and Planning (DAP) Dawood College of Engineering and Technology, Karachi Working as a trainer for YPTU; a research cell involved in investigating current urban planning and development issues of Pakistan, particularly Karachi. Worked with a group of students, to provide an appropriate alternative solution to the proposed 101 acres & 28 million rupees government scheme for the fruit and vegetable market of Karachi. The final expected output is a report and presentation in an open public forum to raise awareness and build up public support for investigating such initiatives. Organised, conducted, participated in a workshop, Career Options in Community Development held at DCET, Karachi, in August 1998. Young professionals from all institutions of Karachi were invited to share their experiences and views in a daylong session. The results of which are to be compiled in the form of a document highlighting the career opportunities in the field of development in Pakistan. Excerpted from the under graduate thesis "Responsive Community Spaces in Lower Income Settlements - Case Study of and Orangi". The paper investigates the correspondence between spaces and culture. Concepts and criteria for responsive spaces are evolved from the focused analysis of the cases.
