BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Hazel Delight Wiley (1904 1990) was born to Edward and Minnie Wiley in Marion, Grant County, Indiana. Delight, who went by her middle name, attended Marion College and went on to become a teacher. Walter Kenneth Murphy (1902 1965) was born to John and Lizzie Murphy in Marion, Grant County, Indiana. He was a pressman by trade, making him responsible for overseeing the operation and maintenance of printing presses. Delight Wiley and Walter Murphy were married on 27 March 1932. The couple had their first child, Frederick Ira Murphy, in 1933. Their second, Norma Louise, was born in 1936 but died in infancy. Frederick Ira Murphy was a showman from his youth. He performed in choirs and theatrical performances and played piano throughout his time at Martin Boots Junior High and Marion High School. He also performed in many church choirs. After graduating from high school in 1951, Murphy attended Butler University, where he pursued religious studies while also taking part in the Butler Choir. Performing proved to be more of a past time, however, as Murphy went on to attend the University of Florida to work towards a PhD in Philosophy in the late 1960s. Murphy wrote a dissertation titled The American Christian Press and Pre-War Hitler's Germany, 1933 1939, as part of his work towards his degree in 1970. Frederick married Patricia Wefler in 1957. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Series One: Murphy Family Manuscripts This series includes all the manuscript items from the Murphy family collection. Most of this series contains items related to Frederick Murphy and his mother, Delight Murphy. There are several programs from Marion High School ca. 1929 1952 as well as a few from Martin Boots Junior High, both of which Frederick attended. Also included is Frederick s baby book and several programs from his musical and theatrical performances. There are two teacher contracts and three graduation certificates for Delight as well as several letters and a memorial book. Series Two: Murphy Family Photographs and Media There are many both black and white and color photographs of Delight, Walter, Frederick, and Patricia Murphy dating from 1904 through the 1980s. A much smaller number of photographs from the late 1800s of Delight s family, the Wileys and Ungers, are also in the collection. Many of the photographs in this collection do not specify names, dates, or locations. Because of this, there are multiple folders of unidentified people and places. As Delight was a school teacher as well as piano teacher, it is likely that many of the unidentified individuals were students of hers. There are two cassette tapes in this series: one a sermon presented by Frederick Murphy and the other a recording of the memorial service for Delight Murphy.
