10 About Geraldton Batavia Marina 11 Economic indicators Geraldton has a diverse economy built around mining, agriculture, fishing and tourism. An important contributor to the Western Australian economy, the Mid West s gross regional product was $6.2 billion in 2014/2015, representing 2.5% of Gross State Product. Mining is the most valuable sector. In 2014/15, the sector s value in the Mid West was estimated at $2 billion (excluding offshore petroleum). Agriculture is also a significant industry for the Mid West. In 2013/14 the region s agricultural gross value was $851 million (9.5% of the State s total); with around 950 agricultural establishments in the region covering a total of 27.4 million hectares. Other agricultural industries include various cereal and legume crops (mainly wheat, lupins and canola) and livestock (mainly cattle, sheep, pigs and goats). In addition to these industries, the Mid West also has a strong and significant manufacturing sector, which recorded a turnover value of $286 million in 2006/07, with 179 manufacturing businesses servicing the needs of the agricultural, mining and fishing industry sectors within and outside the region. The Mid West is also a popular tourist destination, and visitors to the region make an important contribution to the local economy. In 2013/14, domestic and international visitors were estimated to have spent $331 million in the region with a dedicated tourism strategy ensuring this is increasing each and every year. The region s aquaculture industry has grown from around $129,000 in 2005/06 to around $1.6 billion in 2014/15, whilst the region s fishing industry produced a live weight catch of around 4,511 tonnes in 2014/15, valued at around $202 million. The value and size of the rock lobster catch in the Mid West continues to exceed that of any other region.
