Feeding with compassion and aloha Newsletter Winter 2018/2019 A feeding ministry of St. Theresa Church, Kihei, HI Sharing the love at Hale Kau Kau We open the new year, amazed and grateful at how the commandment to Love One Another is exemplified by Hale Kau Kau donors and volunteers. Mahalo nui loa from the bottom of our hearts! The year 2018 capped off with the celebration of our 10,000th consecutive day of meal service on December 26. We cooked up turkey gifted by employees at Maui Health Systems, and served by the front desk staff from the Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort. On this historic 10,000th day, volunteer drivers delivered 84 home bound meals to the frail, sick, disabled and elderly residents of South Maui, and then kitchen volunteers served 72 meals to guests welcomed at our kitchen window. Our figures show we ve served 1.5 million meals in the 27-plus years of service, and we will continue to serve beyond 10,000 days, encouraged by the leadership at St. Theresa Church, the Maui community and people beyond our shores. We are forever grateful for the partnerships we maintain with Ke olahou Congregational Hawaiian Church, Kihei Lutheran Church, the Maui Vicariate and Trinity Episcopal Church by-the-sea. And to our newest partners featured inside this newsletter. We welcome all to join us in our mission to alleviate hunger in South Maui by feeding with compassion and aloha. Carrying out this work means sharing the love in time, talent and treasure, and very shortly, the opportunity to do that presents itself at our 20th Annual Dinner and Auction. The event is set for February 9, 2019 at the Wailea Beach Resort-Marriott, Maui. Visit www.halekaukau.org for details. 1

Thanksgiving and Christmas blessings 2018 Hale Kau Kau celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas by carrying out a longstanding tradition of opening the St. Theresa Church parish hall to all in need of a sit-down lunch. Fueled by the generosity of the Maui community, dozens of local and visiting volunteers served up turkey, ham and all the fixings on Thanksgiving. Christmas featured seafood donated by Eskimo Candy and hams from St. Theresa Church parishioners and the front desk employees at the Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort. A visit from Santa fulfilled the wishes for some 40 keiki (gifts donated by the St. Theresa community s Angel Tree Project), and Kalama Heights residents helped with packing up holiday bags of candy and toiletry items stocked up by Hale Kau Kau donors and delivered to our 75-plus homebound clients. At both events, local talent provided Hawaiian holiday music. We were truly blessed! 4
Sharing the love partnerships We are not alone in our mission to feed the hungry. At Hale Kau Kau, we ve welcomed partners throughout the community who share our commitment to alleviate hunger by providing hot, nutritious meals in a safe and loving environment. Wailea Beach Resort, Marriott Maui, is the only local hotel which prepares an entire dinner from salads to main entrée to dessert so that Hale Kau Kau s home bound clients and window guests are nourished. Flatbread Pizza donates partially baked pizzas once a month, and for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2018, staff volunteers at the Maui Brewing Co., and Bayer Co., cooked meals and took the time to wash dishes and clean the kitchen after meal service. A shout out to our anonymous kitchen volunteers who donated a brand new stove to our kitchen; to the Maui Health Systems for donating turkeys for our 10,000th day of meal service; and to the front desk employees at Grand Wailea for donating hams and filling in as sous chefs on the milestone day. We ve also been blessed by partnerships with Safeway Kihei; Blue Door Bread Company; Eskimo Candy; Sophia Davis at Longs Drugs for a fall flu clinic for window guests and a month s worth of protein supplement for home bound clients; the Hawaii Federal USA Credit Union Kihei employees; Dr. Mary and our fundraiser sponsors and volunteers; our Hale Kau Kau Advisory Board members Karin Carlson, Dr. Mary, David Reader, Pastor Joel Martin and Susan Wiswell; and our grant supporters including the County of Maui, the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation and the Wailea Community Association. 5
Share the Love with Mulligans Mahalo to Mike O Dwyer, owner and operator of Mulligans On the Blue restaurant, for nearly 20 years of support for Hale Kau Kau. The 2018 Mulligans on the Blue golf tournament drew 156 golfers and netted some $19,000, a big chunk of change in supporting our mission to feed the home bound, the hungry and the homeless. Because of such support, Hale Kau Kau is inspired to keep on going strong! 6
In Memoriam: Brenda Albright Hale Kau Kau grieves the loss of one of its most dedicated, all-around volunteers, Brenda Albright, our Advisory Board president. Brenda did it all: working in the kitchen, packing up home bound meals, greeting guests, talking to donors, seeking donations and even creating an auction art piece to sell. We will forever be grateful for modeling Hale Kau Kau s motto of Feeding with Compassion and Aloha. We will miss her smile, her loving presence and her can-do spirit. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband Richard, family and friends. A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. April 13, 2019, at Keawalai i Congregational Church in Makena. The family requests donations be made to Hale Kau Kau in Brenda s honor. Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together. - Paul Ryan 7
Home is where the heart is Just ask those who are beneficiaries of Hale Kau Kau s Homebound meal program. Currently, Hale Kau Kau delivers 85 meals each day to South Maui s frail, sick, disabled and/or elderly. It s a labor of love that involves a team of dedicated volunteers kitchen helpers, drivers, and program organizers all working year-round, and generous donors who believe in giving back to our community and supporting those less fortunate. For some of our homebound clients, a dinner from Hale Kau Kau is their only meal of the day, and in other instances, the volunteer driver is their only visitor of the day. We believe that sharing the love always comes full circle. If interested in becomine a kitchen volunteer and/or driver, please contact Hale Kau Kau. Help make a difference!
