INSIDE OUT -a project about space, form and the rehabilitation process 2017 Matilda Velander Studio 5 Supervised by Ulrika Karlsson & Cecilia Lundbäck
ABOUT THE PROGRAM Chronic Fatigue Syndrome My thesis project is a rehabilitation center for people with chronic fatigue syndrome (also known as burnout ). The disease is caused by long term stress and lack of recovery from it. Often, once the patient is seeing a doctor, the disease is already severely developed. CFS is a tricky disease with mental as well as physical symptoms such as severe exhaustion, memory difficulties and sensitivity to light & sound. (Socialstyrelsen 2003) Stress is the most common cause for sick leave in Sweden (Försäkringskassan 2015) but there are no building designed specifically for people with CFS today. I was interested in what this building could be and how architecture could play a role in the rehabilitation process. To recovery from CFS you need to activate yourself with undemanding activities. Naturally the experience of these spaces for activity place an important role in the process of rehabilitation. I therefor wanted to investigate space and the experience of space. I wanted to put the spaces for rehabilitation in focus and the aim of the project was to design the building from the inside and out. The method for designing in this way was to start from the experience of spaces, to the organisation and orientation of spaces and finally the connection between the spaced in which the activities for rehabilitation are taking place.
ABOUT THE SITE Lilla Amundön My site for the rehabilitation centre is located 20 min from the city centre of Gothenburg on an small hilly peninsula owned by Ågrenska Foundation. It s a national competence centre for children with disabilities and there families. The reason why I chose this site was for its central location and yet isolated feeling from the city. While visiting the site I picked 11 viewpoints or sightlines that I found interesting and that I wanted to be the point of departure when framing the landscape. These spots also became the point of departure when orienting the spaces for activities within the building. SITUATION PLAN 1:2500

ABOUT THE PROPOSAL Figures, orientation and landscape The orientation of the figures are based on the 11 viewpoints. The altitude of the figures are a result of to the varying typography. The figures are all carried by the granite landscape by cut outs in the rocks, and in some cases supported by steel pillars. The figures are connected to each other by a glazed, pitched roof walkway. The walk way is following the typography which makes the visitor more connected with the landscape. By doing this I believe the walkway makes the transitional space between the activities/figures more than just a transport distance. While moving through the walkway your view of the landscape is constantly changing. While entering a figure, the view of the landscape is more directed and framed. The figures are introvert where focus instead lies in the internal stimuli and the activity that you are performing.
