WOMEN IN COMMUNICATIONS.SEATTLE PROFESSIONAL CHAPTER GUIDE History Women in Communications, formerly known as Theta Sigma Phi, is a national honorary society of journalists. Theta Sigma Phi was established in l909 at the University of Washington. The purpose of the organization is to unite women journalists, to honor women who have distinguished themselves in the field, to raise standards for journalism, and to improve conditions for women working in the profession. The name was changed to Women in Communications in l972. Scope and Content The records are primarily of the Seattle chapter from l933 to l991. They include correspondence, minutes, reports, convention proceedings, directories, and publications. There are also photographs, scrapbooks, audio and video tapes, and memorabilia. The records also include some records of the national organization and material related to the Hospitalized Veterans' Writing Project, which the organization supported from 1954 to 1973. This accession is a merger of two sets of records of the organization. Accession No. 4118-90-25 was received 3/l9/1990 and Accession No. 4118-2 was received 8/6/1993, both from Barbara Krohn. The records were processed in 1994 and measure 12 cubic feet.
