about from The 15@Mannum team The history of forums, where ideas, philosophies, politics and big picture thinking are discussed and shared can be traced back to ancient Romans and Greeks and further. More recently festivals of ideas have become big city tourist ventures and in the digital age we can log on to a TED talk or podcast anytime to get our fill of challenging and dangerous concepts. A common element that makes all of these presentations digestible is the art of good story telling. A truly good story teller can portray a lived experienced whilst sharing dangerous and challenging ideas with humour and profundity that touches the listener on a visceral level. 15 @ Mannum introduces these notions of the grand and big, the profound and visceral to a regional town in South Australia. The curators have collected speakers from sportspeople, artists, community leaders and local characters. These people have spent time thinking about their personal connection to the topic Resilience, under the theme of Bounce and are ready to share with you a story, a thought, some ideas. Tonight we are celebrating the art of public speaking, storytelling and yarning, in a slightly different way, where each speaker presents 15 slides for 15 seconds apiece. We hope you ll be entertained and inspired in record time!
Wink Chorney Dick Bromhead Dick has a long history with the Murray River. Well known to the community, he is a riverboat captain and marina owner in Mannum. A grazier s son, he came to the river in 1969 while serving in the military. He has been a wool presser and theatre technician and worked on films as marine contractor. Wink and her partner Michael operate the Murraylands, the only 5 star accredited B&B accommodation in the area. Wink and Michael have withstood the ebbs and flows of difficult business times. She has a long list of skills and jobs including boat design and building; film industry; production industry with the design and manufacture of fountains and sculptures, and finally the hospitality industry in accommodation. Wink is also an avid supporter of the community through her volunteer work with Mid Murray Support Services.
Adam Camporeale and Stephen Packer After his first cinematic experience at the drive-in as a child, Stephen has been completely in love with film as a creative medium. Adam never thought he could turn his love for cinema into a career, but then a twist of fate led him to assist Stephen on an early project and the working world of the film industry was suddenly a reality. With a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing) already under his belt, Adam attended MAPS Film School to adapt his existing skill set to the film production business and hone his eye as a cinematographer. Stephen completed a Bachelor of Media Arts at the University of South Australia in 2011 before working as a freelancer, travelling throughout Africa, Europe and the Pacific shooting documentaries for notable non-profits. The longtime friends created Passel Media to realise their dream of continually bringing creative visions to life. Together they have worked on a huge range of projects from multimillion-dollar features to self-funded shorts, as well as coordinating the media strategy for national non-profit campaigns.
Genevieve Hebart Tim Conybeare Tim has worked for over 15 years in the field of urban design and landscape architecture and has a focus on the planning and design of the public realm. Since moving to Adelaide in 2005, he has built a strong reputation across South Australia for his work in urban design and place making for local and state government agencies. He is a past executive member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects and design studio coordinator and guest critic with the University of Adelaide. He currently holds a position on the Design Review Panel with the Office of Design and Architecture, South Australia. Genevieve is a wife, mother, grandmother, a former nurse with 37 years experience, a committee member of Barossa Food and Barossa Local Health Cluster, member of the Soroptimists of the Barossa Valley, public officer of the Tungkillo Progress Club, member of the Mount Pleasant Show Society and convenor of Show Hall, Mount Pleasant Country Women s Association and chairwoman of the Mt Pleasant Christmas Street Party committee. Since retiring, she has managed a restaurant and was an integral part in establishing the Mt Pleasant Farmers Market of which she is now the manager.
Tim Jones Tim graduated from University of South Australia in 2009 with Master of Architecture. He has been working at Flightpath Architects since his graduation year and became a Registered Architect in March 2014. He is on the executive committee of the Adelaide West Association and committee member of One:One Adelaide, a fun, fast paced temporary design and build collaboration between architectural professionals and students. He specialises in multiple housing and affordable housing projects and has also worked on projects involving heritage and education. Amy Loechel With a background in working with disadvantaged youth in the realm of Youth Justice and Social Work, Amy is passionate about creating opportunities for young people in a rural setting to lead healthy and active lifestyles. Having worked for three years as a Community Development Officer with the Mid Murray Council, Amy s enthusiastic approach to her work has been recognised through five State awards and one National Award for innovation, engagement and participation. As a dedicated volunteer with a love for sport, Amy has a strong association with her community. Having lost her soul mate in a life shattering experience in 2011, Amy s future was suddenly turned upside down, but her strength of character and ability to bounce back has inspired her local community.
Russell Peate Stephen Oatway Steve is a former state swimming champion, state boxing champion, state boxing coach, South Australian boxing team manager, Australian Boxing Team assistant manager Oceania Championships Papua New Guinea. In 2004, he left a 23-year career with the Department of Defence to Live My Dream as a junk artist, exhibited in New York City, Texas, NT and SA. He is the team leader youth worker on Imanpa Aboriginal Community and was bestowed the honour of becoming Cultural Father. Steve is currently a community artist and Shearer s Gallery director. Russell has been Chief Executive Officer of Mid Murray Council since March 2012. He strongly believes in lifelong learning and recently completed the Excellence in Local Government leadership Program at the Australian National University. In 2001, he was the inaugural recipient of the LGMA Exchange Program to South Africa. Originally from Queensland, he has worked in five councils including urban, provincial city and rural councils. He enjoys travel, cooking, going to the gym, watching sport, music, movies and reading and living in Mannum.
Melinda Rankin Melinda loves the way the arts can connect with so many things. Currently the Director of the Murray Bridge Regional Gallery, she seeks to link the arts with the many different parts of the Murraylands community through the gallery s program of exhibitions, workshops and events. As chair of the Regional Galleries Association of SA she gets excited about the different ways that communities throughout the state work to present the arts in their regions. Dr Cameron Raynes Cameron has worked as a barman, welfare worker, anthropologist, historian, copywriter and academic. He lives in Semaphore, teaches history at the University of South Australia and is the author of The Last Protector and The Colour of Kerosene (both printed with SA s Wakefield Press). In 2008, Cameron won the Josephine Ulrick Literary Prize for short story. His short film, The Colour of Kerosene, premiered at the St. Kilda Film Festival 2013, and won Best Australian Film at the Barossa Film Festival in the same year. Cameron s latest work, a young adult novel, has been accepted for publication by MidnightSun Publishing and he is currently working on another history, and several feature film scripts.
Dr James Roberts James Roberts is a writer/director. He was born in America and has lived in Australia for many years. His television credits include documentaries, comedy, history and education series. He coedited the Penguin book, Writers on Writing, after producing the ABC television series. He wrote a comic novel, Pangamonium, as part of his PhD in Creative Writing. It was long-listed for the Commonwealth Book Prize. He is currently adapting it for a screenplay. Angie Roesler Angie is passionate about working within a community development framework, being a community advocate and change agent at local and state level when decisions are made that disadvantages her local and wider community. Angie s work has been recognised and acknowledged by Mid Murray Council and Community Centres SA. Angie has also been inducted into the South Australian Women s Honour Roll and was awarded Adult Learner of the Year in 2011.
Lyn Wood Susie Skinner Susie is a storyteller who works with theatre and music. She was the Artistic Director of D faces of youth arts in Whyalla, South Australia from 2007 to 2010. A Wake - Susie s first solo live art work premiering at Kumuwuki, the 2012 National Regional Arts Conference in Goolwa. Susie is currently a mentor for Wet Paint, a young people s theatre project in Goolwa. She is an artist who wants to be useful. Lyn is a South Australian visual artist, living at Walker Flat. Her studio, Sitting Duck Studio overlooks the Murray River. Her practice includes painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and moving image. Following an extensive teaching career, Lyn completed a Bachelor of Visual Art (honours) at Adelaide Central School of Art in 2009. She is currently employed as a part time teacher, in the Public Art Program, at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Recently she was awarded an Australia Council ArtStart Grant. As well, she has been a category winner and finalist of the Fleurieu Art Prize and the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize. Her ongoing interests remain focussed on landscape and place, as central to who we are. This interest has led to research and exploration into colour and pattern as vehicles to measure the passing of time.
