photo: Jeroen Meijer photo: Jeroen Meijer Vitra Bus Stop Römerstraße 79576 Weil am Rhein http://wwwvitracom/en-gb/collage/campus/ The creation of the Vitra Design Museum by Frank Gehry in 1989 was a turning point in the history of the Vitra project and completed the transformation from a purely industrial site to a meeting place for cultural and commercial activities Over the next few years, new construction projects dared to experiment with architectural forms A conscious decision was made to select architects who normally would not have designed buildings in the Basle area, the aim being to create a site that drew not on regional sources that are now recognised around the world, but designs that stamped their distinctive character on the site through their foreign influences Jasper Morrison, a leading figure of "New Simplicity" a movement that advocated a more modest and also more serious approach to design designed in addition to furniture and accessories a tram system for the city of Hanover, and this project for Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein: a pair of discreet stainless steel bus stop shelters photo: Jeroen Meijer 2006 Jasper Morrison Vitra jpmm By public transport: from Basel main station take the bus to the Vitra campus; By car: autobahn E35, take the exit Weil am Rhein and drive in the direction of the Vitra Design Museum http://wwwmimoaeu/users/sharmila/guides/%20trip%20-%20met%20hashmat/ 5

photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak Conference Pavilion Charles-Eames-Straße 1 D -79576 Weil am Rhein http://wwwdesign-museumde/ Vitra, the German furniture manufacturer, has been collecting buildings by a variety of architects on their factory site near Basel They organize tours over the premises The starting point for the tour is Gehry's sculptural-expressionistic museum building, completed in 1989 - the first of the California architect's buildings to be realised in Europe The Conference Pavilion by Japan's Tadao Ando was also a European premiere The introverted structure is visually impressive with its formal restraint and reduction to a few materials Most of the building is situated under ground The austere and elegantly proportioned conference pavilion is a deliberate contrast to the flamboyance of Gehry's neighboring design museum Along with the museum and Conference Pavilion, the Fire Station by London-based Zaha Hadid is one of the highlights of the tour 1993 Tadao Ando Vitra Design Museum boeboe photo: Wojtek Gurak Monday through Sunday: 10 am - 6 pm Wednesday: 10 am - 8 pm Closed: December 24-25, December 31, January 1 The museum shop and the cafè have the same opening hours as the museum Guided tours are daily, at 12 pm and 2 pm, lasting two hours From February 23, 2008 daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm The number of participants is limited There is no advance registration for public tours Contact: A Gastel, info-weil@design-museumde, or call 0049 (0)7621 702 3200 Public transportation (ÖPNV): From Basel (Badischer Bahnhof) take bus number 55, from the train station in Weil am Rhein it is about a 15-minute walk to the museum By car: The Vitra Design Museum can be reached from Freiburg (north) or Basel (south) via the Autobahn A5 (exit Weil am Rhein), from France/St Louis take the boarder crossing Palmrain From Lörrach/Riehen turn west at the marked junction "Weil am Rhein" just north of the Fondation Beyeler A big car park free of charge exists http://wwwmimoaeu/users/sharmila/guides/%20trip%20-%20met%20hashmat/ 7

photo: Dirk Verwoerd photo: Wojtek Gurak Vitra Design Museum Charles-Eames-Straße 1 D -79576 Weil am Rhein http://wwwdesign-museumde/ The inception of the Vitra Design Museum dates back to the early 1980s With the aim of documenting the history of the Vitra company, Vitra CEO Rolf Fehlbaum began collecting the furniture of designers who had influenced the company's development, such as Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson, Alvar Aalto, and Jean Prouvé The design museum houses temporary exhibitions on themes of furniture design, and Gehry's building makes a suitable host for them - in keeping with the theme, but - once inside supporting, not competing with, the exhibitions As well as Frank Gehry, Alvaro Siza, Nicholas Grimshaw, Tadao Ando and Zaha Hadid are all represented with separate buildings on the grounds of Vitra, in a cross between an industrial plant and a model village photo: Dirk Verwoerd 11-1989 Gehry Partners Vitra Design Museum boeboe Monday through Sunday: 10 am - 6 pm Wednesday: 10 am - 8 pm Closed: December 24-25, December 31, January 1 The museum shop and the cafè have the same opening hours as the museum Guided tours are daily, at 12 pm and 2 pm, lasting two hours From February 23, 2008 daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm The number of participants is limited There is no advance registration for public tours Contact: A Gastel, info-weil@design-museumde, or call 0049 (0)7621 702 3200 Public transportation (ÖPNV): From Basel (Badischer Bahnhof) take bus number 55, from the train station in Weil am Rhein it is about a 15-minute walk to the museum By car: The Vitra Design Museum can be reached from Freiburg (north) or Basel (south) via the Autobahn A5 (exit Weil am Rhein), from France/St Louis take the boarder crossing Palmrain From Lörrach/Riehen turn west at the marked junction "Weil am Rhein" just north of the Fondation Beyeler A big car park free of charge exists http://wwwmimoaeu/users/sharmila/guides/%20trip%20-%20met%20hashmat/ 8

Vitra Furniture Factory Charles-Eames-Straße 2 79576 Weil am Rhein https://wwwvitracom/en-us/campus/architecture/campus-a rchitecture The factory Grimshaw designed for Vitra in 1981 has become a famous and much imitated piece of industrial design The client, whose name is widely associated with contemporary furniture design, initially contacted Grimshaw following a disastrous fire Insurance provided cover for just six months loss of production, so a rapid solution was essential Grimshaw started work on site within three weeks and the first container load of furniture left the factory exactly six months after the first contact was made The fast-track construction used a 25m span pre-cast concrete frame combined with service towers erected independently of the main structure This provided a clear and flexible production floor The lining panels and insulation followed the structure so that the fit-out could proceed in parallel to cladding The cladding is made up of corrugated sheeting, rounded at the building's corners, producing a low maintenance building with clean lines photo: Nazar Leskiw Floor area/size 1981 15000 m² Grimshaw Nazar http://wwwmimoaeu/users/sharmila/guides/%20trip%20-%20met%20hashmat/ 10

photo: Wojtek Gurak photo: Wojtek Gurak Vitra Fire Station Charles-Eames-Straße 1 D-79576 Weil am Rhein http://wwwdesign-museumde/ Following a major fire in 1981, the company Vitra has pursued a conscious approach to its own architecture, starting with the commission awarded to the English architect Nicholas Grimshaw to build a new factory hall After completion of the first structure, he was assigned the task of developing a master plan for the Vitra grounds Now Vitra commissions a different architect for each building project, deliberately contrasting works of architecture confront one another and imbue the site with vitality and a distinctive identity The Fire Station is one of the highlights of the tour Long an icon of deconstructivist architecture, this was the first work ever to be realized by the master architect who is today entrusted with prestigious global commissions Constructed as a working firehouse within the Vitra furniture design and manufacturing complex, the building is now used by Vitra as a showplace for part of its permanent collection of chairs 1994 Zaha Hadid s Vitra Design Museum Naomi photo: Wojtek Gurak Monday through Sunday: 10 am - 6 pm Wednesday: 10 am - 8 pm Closed: December 24-25, December 31, January 1 The museum shop and the cafè have the same opening hours as the museum Vitra offers guided architecture tours in numerous languages over the premises of the Vitra company's factory in Weil am Rhein, daily, at 12 pm and 2 pm, lasting two hours From February 23, 2008 daily at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm Contact: info-weil@design-museumde or call 0049 (0)7621 702 3200 Public transportation (ÖPNV): From Basel (Badischer Bahnhof) take bus number 55, from the train station in Weil am Rhein it is about a 15-minute walk to the museum By car: The Vitra Design Museum can be reached from Freiburg (north) or Basel (south) via the Autobahn A5 (exit Weil am Rhein), from France/St Louis take the boarder crossing Palmrain From Lörrach/Riehen turn west at the marked junction "Weil am Rhein" just north of the Fondation Beyeler A big car park free of charge exists http://wwwmimoaeu/users/sharmila/guides/%20trip%20-%20met%20hashmat/ 11

photo: Roland Halbe photo: Roland Halbe Child and Youth Centre Obere Weinsteige 9 70597 Stuttgart Dating from 1912, this house was built originally as a chemist's shop and dwelling From the late 1970s on, it became inhabited by squatters They managed to stay put until 2002, when the house's owner, the Helene-Pfleiderer-Stiftung, began coaxing the tenants to move out and initiated the plan to convert the house into a council-run youth centre Both foundation and council preferred not to demolish the clinker-faced structure The elements added around the original building push forward strongly like a range of folded mountains The only feature that stands out from the layered composition is an emblematic tower that rises boldly, its topmost level used as a viewing platform Although the rather gruff, offbeat, jagged architecture testifies to the influence of Günther Behnisch, the youth centre as a whole radiates a distinctive style that combines the unconventional with professional discipline photo: Roland Halbe 2006 Project manager Kauffmann Theilig und Partner Jakob Eckert Stuttgarter Jugendhaus Ursula_Baus http://wwwmimoaeu/users/sharmila/guides/%20trip%20-%20met%20hashmat/ 22
