It landed in New York and had sailed from Bremen. He worked at first for a relative, Philip Knoche, in Kansas City, MO. In 1868, took the train and steamboat to Davenport. He then worked on the farm of Ephren Snyder. In 1870, he and his brothers George and Henry bought farmland near Wheatland. By marrying Anna Wagner who had suddenly inherited at least something when brother Louis Wagner died, he had a foothold on some rich farmland southwest of Wheatland.
