Racinowski, Editor/Manager Alderman s Corner As we start the New Year, I want to say thank you for the opportunity to serve you in 2015. I hope you enjoyed the Holidays and are as excited about the New Year as I am. Public safety will always remain our number one priority. In 2016, we will focus on replacing old lighting with the newest LED fixtures; making sure streets are light up as well as focusing on other public safety measures. We will continue to work with the fine men and women of our Chicago Police Department to keep us safe. We ask that you join us for the Landlord and Property Manager Crime Abatement Workshop at 6:30PM on January 14 th at the 9 th District, to learn more about your rights and responsibilities as a property owner. I look forward to working with our Advisory Committees. We are reaching out to those that signed up for the Committees and we will be meeting in the first quarter of 2016. We are excited to have their ideas, feedback and input to improve our communities. City services will remain a top priority for the 11th Ward.We encourage you to call our office, visit our website, or send an email to office@ward11.org. My staff is determined to address all service requests to ensure we make our Ward a better place to live, work and enjoy ourselves. Significant infrastructure projects have been taking place throughout the Ward. I am sure you have seen the water and sewer projects taking place, a street being repaved, or ADA corners installed. We will be combining art and infrastructure by working to decorate our viaducts with various art projects. Development projects are happening throughout the Ward. In addition to the projects that were announced in 2015, we look forward to groundbreaking in the Spring for new single family homes on Root Street, multi unit buildings on Archer and Loomis, the new 18 unit mixed use project on 2000 South Halsted, as well as the 3 new townhome projects in University Village. We are excited about the Halsted Street corridor, as new developments will be announced in the near future. Finally, as the winter weather approaches, please stay warm and safe. I ask that you check on our elderly neighbors and help out when you can. As a reminder, property owners, it is your responsibility to make sure the sidewalk is clear for all to safely walk past. I am so optimistic about 2016 and all of the positive things happening in the Ward. I hope to hear from you this year. As the sign in the Ward Office reads Service to the public is our program. We appreciate your suggestions and criticisms. Patrick D. Thompson 11th Ward Alderman Trinity High School Entrance Exam Trinity High School, 7574 W. Approximately 25 graduates of De La Salle throughout the years participated in the match up with the current junior-varsity team which is in its first year since being reintroduced to the Meteor athletic program. All the players enjoyed the game that ended in a 7-7 tie and in an act of true sportsmanship was followed by the traditional hockey playoff handshake. De La Salle Hosts Successful Alumni Hockey Game - Page 3 While Processing Increase in Appeals Berrios Staff s Early Completion Saves Millions of Dollars for Taxing Bodies and Helps Ensure Timely Mailing of Property Tax Bills. Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios announced today that his office has certified all 2015 assessment values which included the triennial reassessment of the City of Chicago. This included 828,308 parcels of Residential and Industrial/Commercial Property in the City. My office certified the assessment early again this year, guaranteeing other elected officials involved in the property tax cycle enough time to finish their work on schedule. This will help ensure that Second-Installment property tax bills will once again be mailed on the statutorily mandated date of July 1st next year, Berrios said. In all five years since Assessor Berrios took office in 2010, property tax bills have gone out on time. That had never occurred in the previous 34 years. On-time or early assessments save school districts and other taxing bodies millions of dollars in interest on money borrowed while waiting for property tax revenue. The Cook County Assessor s Office (CCAO) has refined the assessment cycle, instituted efficiency measures and made the appeal process easier and more open. All employees are committed to on-time or early performance, every year. We take great pride in eliminating the need for communities to borrow. The millions saved in interest can be better spent on services, Berrios explained. Our being early has also allowed taxpayers to plan their finances with a reliable tax bill schedule. The early completion of this assessment occurred while CCAO handled a continued increase in properties that filed appeals, using the improved process. The agency also conducted more Community Outreach events than in any other year. Assessor Berrios lauded his employees for the quality of their work. He stressed that his office accomplished more with less and that his employees were able to complete the assessment of Cook County s largest and most difficult triennial district while adhering to an accelerated schedule. Our staff accomplished more with fewer employees and did so in remarkable time. We are capable and will continue to work aggressively in 2016, when we reassess North and Northwest Suburban Cook County, Berrios said. Second Time Around Mission Shop CLASSIFIED DEADLINE IS TUESDAY AT NOON Improvements in Water Treatment, Stormwater Management in 2015 Resource Recovery Initiatives Move Ahead in 2016 Ribbon cuttings in 2015 signified major achievements in water quality improvements and storm water management in a year highlighted by the completion of disinfection and the Thornton Composite Reservoir as well as the opening of public trails and the use of green infrastructure and rain barrels. This has been an immensely productive year for the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, said MWRD President Mariyana Spyropoulos. We completed dozens of projects on time and on budget, while continuing to serve as a global leader in environmental stewardship. Among the many projects unveiled in 2015 were two of the following. Since modifying the free rain barrel program in May and publicizing it throughout Cook County communities, the MWRD has signed intergovernmental agreements with more than 60 communities and nongovernment organizations and delivered more than 25,000 rain barrels at no cost to residents. This popular program will continue in 2016. Another investment in green infrastructure, the award-winning Space to Grow program took more productive steps in 2015. The Space to Grow program has now converted six concrete lots across Chicago into sustainable playgrounds with storm water detention. The partnership will convert 30 more schools over the next five years. On Sept. 26, water professionals from around the globe converged at Pershing East Magnet School, 3200 S. Calumet Ave., Chicago, to construct a green infrastructure learning garden as part of the Water Environment Federation's (WEF's) 88th Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference. Also in 2016, the MWRD plans to unveil a new ultraviolet disinfection system at its O'Brien Water Reclamation Plant in Skokie. Just as our duty to protect our water supply and manage storm water and flooding issues has expanded, so too has our resource recovery model, where we are working every day to reduce our carbon footprint and attract renewable resources to promote sustainability for the District and the taxpayers we serve, said President Spyropoulos. Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly hosted three Christmas dinners around the city for seniors living without the help of family and friends. It s a mission that alleviates isolation and loneliness among 1200 Chicagoans each year. Spending Christmas Day alone can take the joy out of the holiday, says Simone Mitchell-Peterson, chief executive officer of Little Brothers. Every day of the year, we make sure seniors feel cared for and remembered. During the holiday, we re especially aware of how important it is to care for our elderly. With the help of nearly 200 volunteers, the organization hosted three dinner celebrations for hundreds of elders, one of which was for Spanish-speaking senior citizens. For homebound seniors and those living in nursing homes, a fleet of volunteers delivered meals as well as a holiday treat to their doors. In addition to Christmas Day festivities, Little Brothers conducts an elder holiday gift drive that generates 1,000 presents each year. Then the gifts are delivered throughout December by volunteers. Elders are like family, many of them have been with our program for years. It s a joy to be able to provide a gift to each one of them, says Mitchell-Peterson. They truly appreciate the gesture, and we appreciate them. Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly provides friendship to seniors in Chicago who are 70 and older and aging without support from family or friends. All services and programs are free to seniors, regardless of income. The nonprofit organization has operated in Chicago since 1959, and serves approximately 1,200 seniors in the city. ** The best days are the ones that start with sunshine and end with moonlight.
