St. Simons Rotar y Volume 19, Number 7 CONVENTION CENTER - THE DREAM BECOMES A REALITY Br unswick Mayor Cor nel l Har v ey shar es his v ision of a Br unswick t hat comes t oget her The Club w elcomed back Cor nell Har vey, Mayor of Br unsw ick, to give us an update on all that is happening in our Por t City. He began his talk by giving us a backgr ound of his life having been bor n in Br unsw ick and gr aduated fr om Glynn Academy. He spent 29 year s in the Air For e and told us how meaningful his car eer was because it allow ed him to tr avel and live in many countr ies ar ound the w or ld. When he r etir ed fr om the militar y, he r etur ned to live in Br unsw ick and w or ked on Jekyll. It was then that he decided that he wanted to become mayor of Br unsw ick and he star ted that jour ney by getting elected to the City Commission. He eventually was elected Mayor of Br unsw ick follow ing in Br ian Thompson's footsteps. His goal as mayor is to make Br unsw ick a better place for all. He said the vision of a Confer ence Center, w hich had long been planned but not r ealized, was now becoming a r eality as it is scheduled to be built. He believes this w ould be the addition to dow ntow n Br unsw ick that w ill br ing it to life along w ith the cur r ent r um distiller y and the br ew er y. He answ er ed many questions, about water and sew er issues, Mar y Ross Par k impr ovements and Highway 17 face lift.
Page Two August 21st Meet ing Col onel Jason A. Wolt er Gar r ison Commander Ft. St ewar t - Hunt er Ar my Air f iel d Colonel Jason Wolter is the Garrison Commander of Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. He is a native of Elgin, Illinois, and was commissioned as an armor officer in 1994 after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy. He has served in a variety of command and staff positions throughout his career. His deployments are many and they include Macedonia and Kosovo and multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Prior to taking command at Fort Stewart in June last year he served as a Senior Military Advisor to the United Nations Mission in Libya. In addition to his military training, Colonel Wolter has earned two Masters degrees, one in Engineering from Northwestern University and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the Army War College. He has earned numerous awards and decorations. Notably two Bronze Star Awards, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Five Meritorious Service Medals and the Joint Service Commendation Medal. Colonel Wolter and his wife Karen have three sons Matt, Scott and Brett, ages 15, 12 and 9.
