Racinowski, Editor/Manager The John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Hosts a Ricobene s Night TONIGHT On March 31, 2010, John McNicholas, woke at 5am complaining of a headache focused over one eye. In the last 6 years over a million dollars has been raised to fund research for pediatric brain tumors. Like minded foundations have joined the cause; Live Like Leah, Live Like Abby and Live Like Finn have joined forces with Live Like John to make a tremendous impact in finding a cure for one of the most deadly forms of pediatric cancers. 100% of funds goes to research. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26th, 2017 11th Ward Improvements Commissioner Daley and Alderman Thompson are happy to join workers from the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and residents in the 3100-3200 Emerald/Halsted alley for the installation of new speed humps. Commissioner Daley and Alderman Thompson worked with CDOT engineers to re-examine this location due to resident concerns regarding speeding and pedestrian safety. The existing 4-foot wide speed humps were replaced with 6 foot wide speed humps. The southernmost speed hump was also relocated further south due to the recommendation from the CDOT engineers. The installation of speed humps in this alley is a good investment in the safety of the families who live on the block and in the surrounding neighborhood, said Commissioner Daley. Public safety will always be my top priority. The relocation of these speed humps will ensure pedestrian safety for the residents who live on the block as well as those who frequent the stores on 31st Street. We will continue to work hard to ensure the safety of our constituents, added Alderman Thompson. Transformational Movement Lessons Movement is life. Life is a process. Improve the process and you improve the quality of life itself *Moshe Feldenkrais Does your mind make promises your body can t keep? Is arising from a chair an ongoing challenge? Are pain and stiffness spoiling your joy of living? Transformational Movement Lessons (TML s) for Vitality and Anti-aging could be your ticket to increased energy and a renewed sense of wellbeing! Our quality of life is directly related to and dependent upon our ability to move easily though the day. The Anat Baniel Method based the principles of brain plasticity and on the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, accesses the nervous system to transform the brain. Through gentle directed movement you will learn to move with more freedom as your brain chooses actions that are the most effortless and pain free. A series of 6 Transformational Movement Lessons will take place at Mercy Hospital & Medical Center, 2525 S. Michigan Ave. on Thursday mornings at 10:30 May 11 thru June 15, The 6 lesson series is $75 when paid in advance (or $15 at lesson). Since this series will be taught sequentially and programmed to teach ease of movement by reeducating the brain, it is most effective when class members attend at least 5 of these sessions. ABM teacher, Virginia Picken, has been highly trained in this work by Anat Baniel and holds Mastery Certificates in the ABM (Anat Baniel Method) for Vitality and Anti-aging, as well as ABM for High Performers and ABM for Children with Special Needs. To learn more about the Anat Baniel Method NeuroMovement lessons please go to www.anatbaniel method.com and click on The Nine Essentials of Neuro- Movement and Anti-Aging and Vitality. Class size is limited. To reserve your place in this class please contact Virginia Picken, 312-933-8860 or ickencrew@earthlink.net. Southside Dog Park in McKinley Park At the request of a group of passionate dog-owners from Bridgeport and McKinley Park, the Chicago Park District has approved a 15,000-square foot portion of McKinley Park on the Southwest corner at Pershing and Western for a dog park! This approval means that the group may continue with the next steps in the application process and raising the initial funds for the project. The Chicago Park District will allow the group to proceed to the next step of the application process only if they can raise $150,000. To begin with this goal, the group has started an online fundraiser, which can be accessed at this address: https://www.youcaring.com/mckinleydfa. The City of Chicago has 23 official dog parks, but the furthest South is Fred Anderson Park, at 19th and Wabash. A Dog Park at McKinley Park would provide an area for families to exercise their dogs off-leash safely and legally. If you are enthusiastic about bringing a fun, fenced-in space for pups to play in the neighborhood, the McKinley Park Dog Park Committee is looking for additional members. The group meets the first Monday of each month in the McKinley Park Fieldhouse at 7pm in the Blue Room and the next meeting is Monday May 1st at 7pm. Co-presidents Angie Robertson and Carina Trudell and Treasurer Min Huang can be reached at mckinleydogpark@gmail.com. Author Unknown Some walks you have to take alone. Suzanne Collins Residents Invited To Act Up Together to Benefit Neighborhoods On May 16, tens of thousands of Chicagoans will participate in The Chicago Community Trust s fourth On the Table - sharing a meal and discussing both challenges and opportunities facing their community, sparking ideas for what they can do to make a difference. To help encourage On the Table participants to move from discussion to action, the Trust today announced the return of the Acting Up awards - up to $150,000 in cash awards to support tangible activities that benefit neighborhoods and public good. Terry Mazany, president and CEO of The Chicago Community Trust said, On the Table conversations can spark new and exciting ways to bring about positive change across the region, and the Acting Up awards allow us to directly support neighborhood champions who rally others and make something good happen. Working in partnership with Goodcity, the Acting Up awards will provide up to 100 $1,000 awards and up to 20 $2,500 awards to On the Table participants who have actionable ideas for community impact coming out of their conversations. On the Table participants are invited to submit a brief video, no more than two minutes, outlining their planned activity. Video entries will be accepted online between May 17 and 31 at www.onthetable.com. A selection committee of diverse regional representatives will select winners based on creativity, level of community engagement and potential impact of the ideas. All Acting Up winners will be announced in late June. For additional rules and regulations, please visit www.onthetable.com/acting-up-awards/. Please join the group at McKinley Park Library at 1915 W. 35th St. on Tuesday, May 16th 2017 at 10:30 a.m., to listen and contribute ideas on how we can improve our community! Registration is kindly requested. Please call the branch 312-747-6082 for more information. BRIDGEPORT NEWS - Page 5 TO PLACE YOUR AD Call: 773.927.0025 3847 S.
