Makarov, Director of the International Laser Center of MSU, Faculty Advisor Dr. O. Kosareva and the Chapter president N. Panov hosted Prof. Malgorzata Kujawinska, 2005 SPIE President, and Executive Director of SPIE Eugene Arthurs accompanied by Executive Director of SPIE Russian Chapter Prof. Edmund Akopov. The honored visitors came to Lomonosov Moscow State University to give a talk and to communicate with the representatives of Moscow and St-Petersburg student chapters. The meeting finished with lively discussions which took place during a banquet for all the participants of the meeting. Prof. Kujawinska and Prof. Eugene Arthurs were in the middle of the crowd answering a great number of students questions. MSU and guest students were extremely thankful for such communication. 3. August 13 17, 2005. Vladimir Militsin (thanks to full financial support of SPIE) and Alexei Belyakov participated in Optics and Photonics 2005 conference held at San Diego, California, USA. Vladimir Militsin made oral presentation of his scientific results at Atmospheric Optical Modeling, Measurement, and Simulation and participated in the exhibition with the poster presentation on the activity of MSU SPIE Student Chapter. Alexei Belyakov presented his experimental setup on studying the human eye aberrations and made oral presentation at Advanced Wavefront Control: Methods, Devices and Applications III. 4. August 28 September 2, 2005. Ph.D. students of the Chair of Oscillations Physics Yurii Dobrolenskii and Natalia Polikarpova, took part in the International Congress on Optics and Optoelectronics (Warsaw, August 28 September 2, 2005) devoted to the 50 th anniversary of SPIE. They made their presentations at the session on Acousto-optics and Photoacoustics. The presentation of Natalia Polikarpova was recognized as the best presentation of the International Congress. Yurii Dobrolenskii participated in SPIE Student Chapter Integration Meeting organized by SPIE Student Chapter of Warsaw University of Technology. Natalia Polikarpova took part in SPIE Women in Optics Dinner, the event which took place during the International Congress. 5. September 27, 2005. The Chapter meeting devoted to the activity planned for the period September December 2005: visiting Young Opticians meeting, participation

in the IVth International Conference for Young Scientists and Specialists Optics 2005 held in St. Petersburg, organizing reception for the undergraduates, organizing Workshop devoted to the anniversary of the Chair of Wave Processes; discussion on the items to be included in the new website. 6. September 27 30, 2005. Ph.D. student Mikhail Kirillin took part in the annual Saratov Fall Meeting conference (Saratov, Russia). He presented the results of his study on non-invasive methods of blood oxygenation sensing in the section Optical Technologies in Biophysics and Medicine. In the frames of the conference Mikhail Kirillin participated in the meeting with former and present members of Saratov State University SPIE Student Chapter and discussed with them modern problems in biophotonics. 7. 30 September, 2005. Fifteen people from MSU Student Chapter under the leadership of Nikolay Panov, the Chapter President, participated in Young Opticians Meeting 2005 held at Moscow Institute of Transportation Engineers. This event was a great possibility to exchange the very different experience between Moscow and Armenian Student Chapters. At this meeting MSU Student Chapter suggested two directions of collaboration between the Chapters: website tools development, such as Resume Wizard accessible internationally to all Student Chapters; development and exchange of computerized lecture courses in different areas of optics. 8. 17 21 October, 2005. Participation in the IVth International Conference for Young Scientists and Specialists Optics 2005 held in St. Petersburg. The Chapter students Nikolay Panov, Elena Kachan, Alexander Grigoryevskii, Alexander Dormidonov, Alexei Bezborodov, gave their talks at the conference. Alexei Bezborodov received the 1 st prize for the best talk of the session. SPIE Student Chapter President Nikolay Panov reported on the recent Chapter activities at the Chapter meeting held in the frameworks of the conference. 9. 28 October, 2005. Nikolay Panov, Vladimir Militsin, Vladimir Fedorov, Alexander Dormidonov, Alexander Grigoryevskii organized welcome reception for the 3 d year undergraduate students planning to start specializing in optics. SPIE Student Chapter President Nikolay Panov gave an overview of the Chapter activities. The Chapter organized and sponsored the reception with soft drinks and snack for about 50 undergraduates. Extensive information about SPIE put on the posters in the reception hall helped the younger students to further understand and ask lots of questions about SPIE membership benefits. 10. November 11, 14 2005. Workshop and tutorials devoted to the celebration of the 40 th anniversary of the Chair of Wave processes. SPIE Chapter students were among the organizers of the Workshop. The two-day meeting consisted of about 20 short tutorials and review talks delivered by the former honored graduates from the Chair addressed to the student audience. These honored graduates either come specially from abroad as Prof. Boris Zhdanov, USA, or arrived from different institutions, as the correspondent member of the Russian Academy of science Prof. Panchenko. Among the lecturers there was a guest speaker from China Prof. Dan Zhu from the Key Laboratory of Administrator of Education of China, Huazhong University of Science and Technology. 11. September 2005 June 2006: Construction of the new Chapter website with the new design and resume wizard, which can be filled and/or downloaded by SPIE student

chapters all over the world. During the period January June 2006 the new website feature was introduced: when clicking on the member name at the page http://spie.ilc.edu.ru/members.htm, the picture of the Chapter member appears. 12. April 26, 2006: SPIE Student Chapter meeting was held. 16 chapter members were present: Vladimir Militsin, Vladimir Fedorov, Perezhogin Igor, Khokhlova Tatyana, Mikhail Kirillin, Pavel Bokov, Kachan Elena, Dormidonov Alexander, Zabotnov Stanislav, Ostapenko Irina, Piskunov Nikolay, Dobrolenskiy Yury, Krutkova Elena, Bezborodov Alexey, Murtazin Ildar, Mitrokhin Vladimir. Two important questions were discussed: i) re-election of the student chapter office: since Nikolay Panov leadership was very fruitful, it was decided that he preserves his president position for half a year. The same situation is with Igor Perezhogin. Vladimir Fedorov retained his secretary position. A new office member, Alexander Dormidonov, the first year PhD student, was introduced into the Chapter as a Treasurer instead of Vladimir Militsin. ii) organizing and detailed event planning for the Second International Laser Graduate School «Modern Problems of Laser Physics» to be held in Moscow Region (Protvino), October 10-13, 2006, website http://lgs.ilc.edu.ru/en This Graduate School is partially supported by SPIE and most of the Chapter members will be in the Organizing Committee of the event. The duties will be distributed among the responsibility centers as follows: - Olga Kosareva (advisor) and Nikolay Panov the overall coordination - Technical support: Vladimir Militsin, Vladimir Fedorov - program and abstracts: Mikhail Kirillin, Pavel Bokov - guest support: Kachan Elena, Dormidonov Alexander - Evening events and SPIE promotion action: Fedorov Vladimir, Khokhlova Tatyana, The duties, concerning each responsibility center, were carefully discussed and the students expressed their initiative in taking the responsibilities. The meeting was finalized late in the evening with informal discussion and soft drinks with snacks.
