SHADOWGRAPHS by Frances Apple 1

Frances E. Apple, AA, FASRT Frances E. Apple, AA, FASRT hails from Morganton, NC. Following her graduation from Morganton High School in 1948 she attended Campbell Jr. College where she received her AA degree in 1951. Upon graduation she entered the Grace Hospital x-ray training program. Frances went straight from Grace Hospital to become Chief Technologist at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro, NC. During this time she became registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and also joined the NCSRT, Inc. and the ASRT. In 1956 she left the hospital setting for work in the orthopaedic office of Dr. William D. Wright, where she would spend the next 14 years. Frances served as Secretary-Treasurer in 1957 and1958, ASRT Counselor for North 2

Carolina from 1959 1961 and chaired the annual meetings for 1957, 1968 and 1989. She was editor of the TARHEEL CASSETTE from 1970-1974, Reeves-Rousseau Memorial Lecturer in 1975 and Executive Secretary from 1969-1980. 1970 brought a major change when Frances moved to Durham to open x-ray services in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke Hospital. Her knowledge of orthopaedics and willingness to share this information through teaching, lectures and exhibits endeared her to staff and students alike. In 1978 the NCSRT, Inc. honored Frances with Life Membership and in 2005 awarded her with Emeritus Member. Frances was elevated to Fellow of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists in 1987. From 1959 Frances served on many committees for the ASRT; chaired the Fellows Committee and served as Sergeant at Arms in 3

the House of Delegates from 1990 to 1995, three years as Chief Sergeant at Arms. In 1995 Frances was elected Secretary/Treasurer of the ASRT and moved on to the Presidency and Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2000. In 2001 she was honored with Life membership in the ASRT and retired from Duke University Medical Center the same year. Her plan was to write the history of the NCSRT, Inc. In August 2002 her friend and mentor Jane Cox Hendrix died and the NCSRT, Inc. established a scholarship in her memory. Funding was a problem so Frances decided to sell Jane s Shadowgraphs. In 2006 the first scholarships were awarded at the annual meeting of the NCSRT, Inc. In 2007 Frances began x-raying flowers to add to her collection. Jane s love of her Shadowgraphs has passed to her student. 4

Jane Cox Hendrix Scholarship History In 2002 the North Carolina Society of Radiologic Technologists Inc. established a scholarship to honor the memory of Jane Cox Hendrix, RN, RT(R) who passed away. The purpose of the scholarship is to aid either graduate or undergraduate radiologic technology students. Jane Cox received her X-ray training at Duke University Medical Center and was active in the NCSRT, Inc. as President and served as ASRT Counselor to North Carolina. She was employed by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to teach x-ray physics in the late 40 s. While there she experimented with x-raying flowers using a superficial therapy machine. Her Shadowgraphs won national recognition for an individual technical exhibit at the 1949 ASRT meeting in San Francisco. 5

Her technique was printed in the 1953 ASRT Journal. In addition her work was exhibited at the State Art Gallery in Raleigh and two of her prints went on world tour with the International Photography-in- Science Salon Exhibit of the Smithsonian Museum. Jane was honored with Honorary membership in the NCSRT, Inc. and in 1983 presented the Reeves- Rousseau Memorial lecture. When Jane married William P. Hendrix she retired from professional life and left a legacy of beauty for all to enjoy. The NCSRT, Inc. has commissioned reprints of her flowers to be sold in order to fund the scholarship. Prints will be sold on the NCSRT, Inc. web site, www.ncsrt.org and at the Annual Conference and selected One Day Seminars. Cash donation are also greatly appreciated. 6
