e-newsletter 06 13 The UIA congress will take place in Durban on 3 to 7 August 2014. It will be followed by a general assembly on 7 to 10 August 2014. WARWICK JUNCTION UIA2014 INTERNATIONAL STUDENT COMPETITION In keeping with the congress theme Architecture Otherwhere, the aim of the 2014 student competition is to highlight the complex ecology of Warwick Junction and its economic, social and cultural dynamic by proposing solutions that will benefit and contribute to the well being of the community and the half a million people who frequent this area every day. Projects must propose three simultaneous visions: a long-term, large scale solution; a medium term, medium scale solution; and an immediate, small-scale intervention. http://www.uia-architectes.org/participer/concours/7547#.ucqfnby7n74 CULTURE & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT HANGZHOU DECLARATION On 14-17 May, Albert Dubler represented UIA at a UNESCO congress on the theme, Culture: key to sustainable development. Calling for a new development approach, the Hangzhou Declaration, issued at the congress, advocates for placing culture at the heart of public policy. It urges governments, civil society and the private sector to harness the power of culture when addressing the world s most pressing development challenges: environmental sustainability, poverty, and social inclusion. With Wang Shu, the UIA president stressed the eminently cultural aspect of architecture. They are marked by a strong tradition of collaboration and activism and by interventions that are both incisive and strategic. The 2013 congress will take place on 4-6 July at the Fine Arts faculty in Lisbon and will focus on the theme: The Future of Architecture: TODAY. http://www.13congressodosarquitectos.pt/ ESTONIA THREE YOUNG ARCHITECTS TO REPRESENT ESTONIA IN VENICE Johanna Jõekalda, Johan Tali and Siim Tuksam won the contest organised by the Union of Architects of Estonia (UAE) and the Estonian Ministry of Culture to find the curators for Estonia's exhibition at the 2014 Venice Biennial. Their project called "Open Space" drew the votes of the jury chaired by UAE President Peeter Pere, who described their contribution in these terms: they are indeed young and still at the beginning of their path of development as architects, but I believe that they have the potential to bring contemporary Estonian architecture to the international public in an exciting and up-to-date way that will strengthen Estonia s good reputation as an e-country and will skilfully tie it in with the topic of architecture. http://www.arhitektuurikeskus.ee/en/ BRAZIL XTH BIENNIAL SAO PAULO This tenth edition of the architecture biennial organised by the Institute of Architects of Brazil - Sao Paulo chapter (IAB-SP) will take place from 28 September - 24 November 2013. BRAZIL PORTUGAL FOOTSTEPS THROUGH THE CITY - NUNO PORTAS The Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB-RJ) is presenting an exhibition dedicated to Portuguese architect and urban planner Nuno Portas until 31 July 2013, in Rio. The exhibit is on display in the Oscar Niemeyer architecture centre under the title: The Urban Being, following Nuno Portas' footsteps. The Belem Cultural Centre in Lisbon created the exhibition as part of celebrations for Guimarães - 2012 European Cultural Capital, and it is appearing for the first time outside of Portugal. Though his work as an architect led Nuno Portas to design some of the most important edifices in modern Portuguese architecture, the exhibition follows the path of his reflections on the city, urban planning, and regional planning policies. http://www.iab.org.br/ BELARUS YOUNG ARCHITECTS BIENNIAL IN MINSK The Belarus Union of Architects is organising the 10th Minsk Architecture Festival on 26-28 September 2013, which will include the international young architects' biennial and awarding of the Leonardo prize.
