Nagar & Mambalam www.mambalamtimes.in Vol. 21, No. 8 1048th Issue : July 18-24, 2015 Student falls to death after climbing roof of passageway in school 14-year-old Aadith Kumar, a resident of Mannar Street, T. Nagar, and a Std. 9 student of Don Bosco Matriculation School, Egmore, died on July 16 after reportedly falling from a height of 35 feet from an asbestos roof in the school. According to the police, Aadith, the son of a businessman, Kathiravan, who had climbed the asbestos roof of a passageway leading to the three-storey school auditorium plunged headlong to the ground after the roofing gave way. The police said that he was playing with two other students after school hours, when he suddenly clim-bed onto the asbestos roof. School officials told the police that other students informed them that Aadith was lying uncon-scious on the ground floor. They found the boy bleeding profusely from his wounds. He was rushed to a hospital nearby where he died later. After a prelim-inary probe, police said Aadith was ap-parently trying to impress his friends by climbing on the asbestos roof. FREE

Advertise in the Classified Columns of Mambalam Times for immediate response. July 18-24, 2015 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Roadside eateries a health hazard Sir, Of late, a number of unlicensed mobile eateries have come up in several nooks and corners of the streets in T. Nagar, selling fast food. Even the commercial complexes in the suburb have put up sheds to sell fast food. While the aroma emanating from these food items would tempt people to eat them, the question is: Are they made hygienically and are they fit enough for consumption? At the very look and the way they are kept in the open with flies encircling the food items, one could easily judge that these items are not hygienic and unsafe for human consumption. The quality of water and oil used to make these items is also unknown. Wax coated paper cups are widely used to serve beverages and other snacks like peanuts and chat items. Do these roadside outlets come under the purview of the Health Department and do Health Inspectors sample the food sold by these outlets? There have been several instances of persons coming down with stomach infection or fever after eating at these roadside outlets. To add to the problems of health, many of these eateries, including some hotels, let out waste into the drainage pipes which often get blocked causing lot of problems to the residents. When there is so much of hype and hoopla over the noodles made by the giant Nestle, one wonders why there are no efforts on the part of the authorities to stop proliferation of mobile/roadside eateries and sale of unhealthy food that is consumed aplenty by the denizens. T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar Pedestrian plaza project delayed due to protest by commercial lobby Sir, The proposal to put up a pedestrian plaza on Thyagaraya Road from Bashaym Road to Anna Salai seems to have met with stiff opposition from shopkeepers. The shopkeepers fear that if the plaza comes up, they may incur loss of business. Following the opposition by the commercial lobby, the civic body is on a mission to convince the shop owners. Chennai Corporation must bear in mind that the pedestrian plaza is being planned for the comfort of the public. As such, why should it bother about the shopkeepers and try to convince them? If the shopkeepers continue to oppose it, will the civic body give up the project? Does not such a move send a wrong signal to the public? The shopkeepers have been doing business giving maximum inconvenience to the public. Even the footpaths meant for pedestrians have been usurped by the shopkeepers. If the civic body has any concern for the public, it must go ahead with the proposal by ignoring the protests of the shopkeepers. V.S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar Authorities should enforce stricter laws to curb chain snatching Sir, Of late there has been an increase in the incidence of chain snatching in the city. It is almost reported daily in the media. It has more or less become a full time profession for many as they go uncaught. It is also disturbing to note that in many cases the culprits have been found to be educated youths who do it for obtaining fast buck to splurge on luxuries. The huge increase in price of gold has made this crime more lucrative. Many incidents go unreported as the investigation process is tedious and expensive. Even when a culprit is apprehended, the laws are lax enough for him to get out on bail easily. It has become an ordeal for a lone woman walking on the road. Recently in our neighbourhood, a lurking chain snatcher struck in the morning when the woman of the house was drawing kolam in front of her house. Will the police and law makers enforce stricter penalties to mitigate the crime? Dr. Chidambarakumarasamy, 53 rd Street, Ashok Nagar Residents should lend support to TNRWA Sir, This is with reference to the article T. Nagar Residents Welfare Association on member recruitment drive published in Mambalam Times last week. The association is rendering a very good service to the neighborhood with respect to civic issues. It is fighting for the eviction of unauthorised hawkers, who have occupied the entire service lane of Usman Road and battling for the pedestrian s rights. It organises frequent meets with the elected representatives and authorities of the various govt. departments to discuss and find solutions to civic problems. Through its diligent efforts, long standing Metrowater issues were solved in a number of neighbourhood colonies. The association also has a legal wing to fight against the large scale building norm violators and law breakers. More and more residents should rise to the Association s call and enroll as members and render their service to create a pollutionfree, hawker-free and violation-free T. Nagar. Sooryan Basheer, Ramanathan Street, T. Nagar Do not close down Railway Station Post Office Sir, There was a proposal to shift Railway Station Post Office (Station Road, West Mambalam) to some other rented place. But it appears that the proposal has been shelved and the authorities have instead decided to merge it the Main Post Office in Postal Colony, West Mambalam. It will affect senior citizens like me as Postal Colony Post Office is not within walking distance of Station Road. I request the postal authorities to reconsider the decision and allow the Railway Station Post Office to continue in the present location for the benefit of the nearby residents. T.V. Bashyam, Manickam Street, West Mambalam

Page 8 CMRL witnesses steep drop in passengers on weekdays After an enthusiastic response on the inaugural day on June 29, the number of commuters on the Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has dropped drastically on weekdays. For regular commuters who self drive or use other means of public transport, it is a combination of reasons, including connectivity, high fares and accessibility to the station that deters them from switching over to Metro Rail. The commuters are far and few at Ashok Nagar station on weekdays. The photos taken during the morning peak hours on a weekday shows close to empty platforms and coaches. However, good crowds can be seen on Saturdays and Is a proxy allowed by the helmet rule? Sundays when non regular commuters travel to experience the ride. A.L. Bhatnakar, a senior executive with CMRL, said that the drop in passenger crowds was expected as CMRL had only opened a small stretch of 10km. It was more of a trial beginning for us, he said. Once the 20 km stretch from Egmore to St. Thomas Mount becomes operational, the connectivity will improve and more and more passengers would opt for Metro Rail, he added.
