The students wore red and used hand created masks. Fortune cookies and red lucky candy was given to all. The school also had activities and participated in the Chinese New Year parade in Chinatown on the 14th. GUNG HAY FAT CHOY! Joe Hammar, 52, is this month s Southland Area Bridgeport News Athlete of the Month. Joe is new to the Special Olympics program and only began competing last year when he joined the McGuane Magic team. His first competition ever was at the Spring Games in May 2015. Joe competes in bocce, track & field and snowshoe, with his favorite sports being basketball and baseball. A highlight of the past year for Joe was when he received his first gold medal in the basketball skills competition. Since that time, Joe has earned another four medals! Joe will be traveling to Normal, Illinois, March 11th-13th to compete at the State level for the first time. Being in the Special Olympics has been a great experience for Joe, says Donna, Joe s sister. I haven t seen him this inspired in a long time. He looks forward to practice and competitions. We are so thankful for his friend, Russell, for encouraging him to join. Joe is a life-long resident of Bridgeport and is the youngest of five children. He lives in his childhood home with two of his siblings. My family is very supportive, says Joe. In his spare time, Joe enjoys collecting baseball autographs and walking around the Bridgeport neighborhood. When he is not competing, Joe likes to relax at home. Joe has great determination, says Donna. He has fought his way back from some medical issues this summer that kept him from competing in some competitions. He came back strong this winter and was able to win the gold medal using his non-dominant arm! He is looking forward to the State Basketball Tournament in March. Joe says his favorite thing about competing is meeting new people and having fun. Special Olympics is a good cause for people. It gives something for people to do, and is a good way to meet new people. Joe is a very laid back and easy going guy, says Kate McIntosh, coach of the McGuane Magic. He is very interesting to talk to and is very well-liked by others. He has impressed his coaches tremendously this year with his ability to never quit, despite some medical set-backs. Joe has worked so hard to regain his strength and his determination to compete. I am so proud of Joe and I am looking forward to seeing what he will accomplish this year. Joe is inspiring and sets an example to his fellow athletes to never give up. I am so excited that Joe received his first gold medal this year and I can t wait to watch him compete in the State Tournament for the very first time! Mark your calendars! The Chicago Polar Plunge will take place Sunday, March 6 at North Avenue Beach. Plunge individually or with a team to help support the year-round programs and activities enjoyed by Joe and the 6000 athletes of Special Olympics Chicago. Get active and eat healthy. Bridgeport Catholic Academy Highlights Throughout the school year, Kindergarten students at BCA have been pen-pals with Farmer George Dixon of Colchester, IL through the Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom program. The Kindergarteners have sent letters and questions about farmlife and Farmer George always responds with lots of information and even some pictures. Students were very excited to learn that farming is a job for the whole family with everyone doing their part. This week, Farmer George and three members of the McDonough County Farm Bureau paid the Kindergarten class a visit! They brought lots of activities related to Tractors and farming. Students created tractors out of the letter T, cooked up a tractor shaped snack to eat, painted tractor tire prints and played with miniature farm implements. Farmer George shared pictures of his farm animals, equipment and family, answered every question the students came up with and brought samples of corn, soybeans, hay and silage to touch and explore! The class had a wonderful visit and really enjoyed spending the afternoon with our buddy, Farmer George! Girl s Night Out Feeling frustrated and confused over your relationship with God? Simply go to www.mcgbaseball.com to register and save time. This year, age groups will be as follows (to be eligible for any age group, you must be in that age range as of May 1, 2016): Pee Wee (ages 3-4), Tee Ball (ages 4-6), Rookie (ages 6-8), Minor (ages 8-10), Major (ages 11-12), Pony (ages 13-14) As we ve done over the years, we have overlapped age groups to allow parents flexibility in determining which age group is best suited for their child. We've also lowered the age group in major and expanded our pony division. This was done to help further the development of pre-teens and prepare them for the bigger field. We were able to accomplish this by renovating our Pony field.over the fall, McGuane Baseball invested into Field #2 (southeast field), making the field more versatile so that both high school and pre-high school players can play on dimensions best suited for them. McGuane now has one of the only grass infields in the city with 80-foot base dimensions. For those unable to register online, we will be holding in-person registration this Saturday, February 20 from 11:00am to 12:30pm in the McGuane Park Fieldhouse (2901 S. Poplar). You may also hold your spot by texting 773-373-9983. For more information, visit www. dmcgbaseball.com or call 312-504-0065. 2016 McGuane Park Spring Programming It s time to register for the Spring session!
