Boerenerf Passend in de historische traditie van Oud Empel, een klein lintdorp op de dijk langs de Maas, waarbij grote boerderijen en hun opstallen aan de veilige, binnendijkse kant van de dijk geplaatst zijn, worden vier nieuwe woningen losjes over de locatie verspreid. Zoals bij lokale boerenerven wordt hier het stevige bakstenen herenhuis met de grote schoorstenen in directe relatie met de straat geplaatst. Hierdoor wordt tevens de entree van het dorp gemarkeerd. De grote stallen worden gegroepeerd rond een gezamenlijk voorerf. In deze stallen wordt een houten constructie met gebinten en dekbalken toegepast. Hiermee wordt in de bouwmethodiek gerefereerd aan het traditionele en streekgebonden bouwen. Door de wijze van detailleren, materiaalkeuze en eigentijdse vormgeving blijft het geheel als een moderne inpassing herkenbaar, maakt het plan een brug naar de 21e eeuw. 3 4 1 2 Farmyard Due to the demolition of several old sheds a unique plot became vacant in Oud Empel, a small village situated along side embankment of the river Maas. The dike divides the village in two parts: the unsafe waterfront where smaller labourer cottages are situatted and a protected side with large farms and small factories where the notables lived. With respect to this historical setting four new volumes are scattered loosely on the protected location. The volumes make a characteristic historical composition of a farmyard with a large brick house with barns. But instead of agricultural expectations it has an residential function. The brick house is directly related to the street, like in other local farmyards, marking the entrance of the village. The floor plan of this house is based on a classical dwelling, consisting of a centralised entrance, a large hall and majestic stairs. Two large chimneys affirm the image of a grand house. A yard is placed aside the house and gives acces to the barn volumes and forms and intermediate between the village and the barn houses. One barn is facing the street while the other is parallel tot the street and slightly sunken into the slope of the dike. The fourth volume is located at the foot of the dike, invisible from the main road. This house exists of two smaller volumes: a more closed volume which houses the private funtions such a sleeping and bathing and one extrovert glass volume which contains the living area and the kitchen. Whereas the brick main house is more exuberant considering its materials, the barns are sober in terms of aesthetics and have a subtle modern use and detailling of historical materials. The volumes are characterized by large roof surfaces, low gutters and moderate heights.
