Moriyama RAIC International Prize About the Prize* Raymond Moriyama, FRAIC, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the RAIC Foundation created the Moriyama RAIC International Prize in 2014 to raise the international stature of the RAIC and the Canadian architectural profession, and to encourage Canadian architects to aspire to international excellence. The Moriyama RAIC International Prize is awarded every two years. It consists of a monetary award of CAD $100,000 and a handcrafted sculpture designed by Canadian designer Wei Yew. Each edition of the prize features a new piece by Wei Yew based on a unique interpretation of the Canadian landscape. The prize is awarded to an architect, team of architects, or architect-led collaboration, based anywhere in the world, in recognition of a single work of architecture that is judged to be transformative within its societal context and expressive of the humanistic values of justice, respect, equality and inclusiveness. The jury will consider a range of criteria in the evaluation of submissions, including: the building s formal and experiential qualities; the efficiency and effectiveness of the building in use; response to site, climate and environmental conditions; quality of engagement with the broader context - social, cultural, historic and political; craftsmanship. *For further information on the Moriyama RAIC International Prize, please see the Terms of Reference. My hope is that this prize will help raise not only RAIC s stature internationally but also the stature of canada and inspire all canadians and canadian architects to aspire higher. The Moriyama RAIC International Prize recognizes the exceptional contribution of architecture to a community. This unique award focuses on a project that embodies the values of humanism, equality and inclusivity. We are thrilled to launch the 2017 edition of this award, and I look forward to exploring how a single project contributes to the human environment and makes a difference.
