EXTRA-EXTRA-EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT THE BRIDGEPORT NEWS IS WORLDWIDE... See the Bridgeport News weekly online by visiting our website www.bridgeportnews.net VOLUME 78 NO. 04 Free Home Delivery 773 927 0025 J. Racinowski, Editor/Manager Alderman s Corner I hope everyone is enjoying summer. Block parties, barbecues and spending time with family and friends. Oh & of course, NO SCHOOL! Chicago offers so much to do and hopefully we take advantage of the beaches, Navy Pier and festivals. On July 12th, Commissioner Daley and I hosted our seniors at Armour Park for our summer party. This Year s theme was Country Hoe Down. Everyone enjoyed the pulled pork, burgers, hot dogs along with line dancing. We would like to thank the Park District, the many generous sponsors and all of our young camp counselors for making it a success. Two weeks later, Commissioner Daley and I hosted the 11th Ward Fishing Derby. Some of you may remember this annual event when we were younger. I am glad we brought it back. About 75 kids participated in this event. I would like to thank Tom Palmisano, the Henry Palmisano Fishing Foundation, the Scalise family for providing our snacks and coffee, as well as all of our volunteers that made this event such a success. Congratulations to the winners and all who participated. We hope you will continue to fish and enjoy Palmisano Park. With the school year approaching I wanted to touch base on an issue that our community has been faced with; a neighborhood public high school. Over the course of the last several weeks there have been open meetings with the Chicago Public School (CPS) regarding the National Teachers Academy and South Loop School. CPS hosted three different meetings where they provided the audience with an informative presentation about a need for a high school in the South Loop and near South area. It was great to hear how passionate the families, principals and teachers are about their schools and the future of our children. It was important for me to hear from the NTA community, South Loop community and the community members who expressed the need for a high school. The thoughts, ideas and concerns were a great starting discussion and I am pleased that CPS and my colleagues are listening. The entire presentation and open commenting was informative especially because there are various voices that need to be heard on the different challenges each entity faces. In the end, all agreed that a new high quality high school is needed. As this exploratory process proceeds, I ll be advocating ensuring the needs and concerns of parents and residents are addressed, and ensure that whatever agreement is reached is good for our kids, parents, teachers and neighborhoods. Let s enjoy the remaining weeks of summer. Some of our kids will be starting school in August and right after Labor Day all students and teachers will be back. We look forward to a great academic year, but first we should savor the summer. 11th Ward Alderman Patrick D. Thompson Dr. Steven Arnstein Announces His Retirement Dr. Steven Arnstein would like to thank all his patients for choosing his dental services for over the last 51 years. 12 1 17 As his retirement approaches he has announced the he has merged his dental practice with Dr. Victor Ramirez of Advent Dental located at 3443 S. Growing Power Recently ComEd and Growing Power, a nonprofit that works to provide safe, affordable, and healthy foods to people in all communities, celebrated the unveiling of the new 35th Street Community Garden in Bridgeport. State Representative Theresa Mah, Commissioner at the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) John Rosales, ComEd and Growing Power representatives, and community members attended the event to praise the hard work of local high school students who have spent hundreds of hours cultivating the new outdoor garden. The students are part of an internship program developed by ComEd and Growing Power that gives local teens the opportunity to design, plant, and harvest a garden outside of ComEd s Chicago Training Center over the course of the year. At the unveiling, many students noted that they have enjoyed watching their original ideas for the garden come to life and learning about the plants benefits beyond their natural beauty, including their medicinal and herbal uses. This is a great initiative that not only demonstrates ComEd s commitment to introduce local youth to STEM fields in a unique and collaborative manner, but also shows ComEd s commitment to maintaining the beautiful neighborhoods and communities we serve, said Paula Conrad, Senior Manager, Corporate Relations, ComEd. "The students have dedicated hundreds of hours to researching, designing, and planting a community garden that not only looks beautiful, but some of the harvest will be put to good use. We are proud to showcase their efforts outside of our Chicago Training Center and hope residents and visitors to the Bridgeport neighborhood enjoy our new garden." The partnership has allowed Growing Power to maintain a presence in the Bridgeport neighborhood since 2012. The 16 students currently involved in the program reside in the Bridgeport, Back of the Yards, Washington Heights, Englewood, Bryant Park, Auburn Gresham, and Pilsen neighborhoods. They will continue to cultivate and harvest the garden throughout the summer and fall. Thanks to ComEd's partnership, Growing Power was able to maintain a program for local teens in the Bridgeport neighborhood after the closure of our Iron Street Farm, said Lauralyn Clawson, Youth Program Manager, Growing Power. The dedicated work of our students has transformed the fence line along ComEd s Chicago Training Center into a beautiful and productive space that can be enjoyed by the community for years to come.
