ARCHITECTURE AT READING Do you have an interest in buildings and places? If you have a creative mind, and you want to shape the future, an undergraduate degree in Architecture at Reading could be the first step on an exciting career journey. WHY READING? All students who enrol on the BSc (Hons) Architecture course in 2017 will have the opportunity of securing an annual 2,000 scholarship for each of the three years of the undergraduate degree. To be eligible, you will need to have applied through UCAS by 15 January 2017 and selected our course as your firm choice by 4 May 2017.* Students will benefit from 24-hour access to dedicated studio spaces in a newly-refurbished building, as well as use of facilities equipped with cuttingedge digital technologies, including 3-D printing and immersive virtual-reality environments. The new School of Architecture will sit alongside the established discipline of Construction Management and Engineering in an enlarged School of the Built Environment. Architects increasingly operate within the context of multidisciplinary teams. The new school will provide exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary learning in an expanding and vibrant academic environment. Students will develop their communication and visualisation skills (including freehand drawing and model-making as well as digital media skills) in a creative and supportive environment. We are committed to excellence in teaching and learning and to enhancing the student experience. Students will work on live projects at building, neighbourhood and city scales, and will be taught by experienced practising architects as well as by leading academics. The programme builds on our strong existing connectivity within architecture firms and the broader construction and property sectors. The learning outcomes have been designed with the needs of employers in mind, and with a view to enhancing the employability of our graduates. The University of Reading is one of the UK s top-ranking institutions for research in architecture, built environment and planning. The new programme will benefit from our expertise in digital practices, particularly around visualisation and 3D modelling; in sustainable cities; and in retrofit and regeneration. We are in the process of obtaining accreditation of the new programme by relevant organisations. Our Foundation Professor, Lorraine Farrelly, frequently chairs validation panels for the Royal Institute of British Architects. Gaining a degree in Architecture at Reading will open up a wide range of global career opportunities. * Subject to conditions The new School presents a degree with an industry and practice focus. We offer students experience in practice as part of their undergraduate programme. Our dialogue with industry and practice leaders ensures that our curriculum prepares students for careers in architecture in the 21st century. Lorraine Farrelly Foundation Professor of Architecture 3

THE APPLICATION PROCESS As part of the application process for acceptance onto the BSc Honours Architecture course, you will normally be invited for an interview. You will need to present a portfolio which shows evidence of your creative ability and 3-dimensional understanding. These attributes are essential to the study of architecture. We will not determine your application until we have assessed both your UCAS application and your portfolio. Where a portfolio is of exceptionally high quality, this may have a significant impact on the likelihood of acceptance onto the programme. The portfolio should demonstrate creative thinking as well as technical ability. There is no expectation of any prior digital drawing skills. However, if you have drawings or other graphic representations which have been developed using any type of software, these should be included. Freehand skills are particularly valued in architecture, therefore sketchbooks showing creative thinking and ideas are particularly valuable. The portfolio may be made up of outputs from an Art or Design- related A level, or other relevant work. Please include photographs of any large-scale work which cannot otherwise be readily included in the portfolio. The portfolio should contain a mixture of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional pieces. This may include any of the following: Hand- drawn sketches of places, spaces, or buildings Photographic studies Collage, mixed media Analytical drawings Computer aided drawings (CAD) Images made by using Photoshop or other software Graphic design, website design Photographs of 3-D work, such as: sculpture, art installation, scale models Photographs of work in progress forming part of Art/ Design studies. 4

At the interview we will discuss your motivation to study architecture and will talk through your portfolio, exploring your approaches to drawing and design. In your personal statement it will be important to explain any experience or skills you have which relate to the study of architecture, as well as your motivation to undertake the programme. In addition, you should describe any experiences/ extra curricular activities which have influenced your decision to study architecture. For international students (or home/eu students based overseas), we will ask for a digital portfolio containing evidence of original work as described above. This should be saved and sent as a PDF, with a file name which includes your name and UCAS reference number. Images should have a clear title and date and you should include confirmation that your work is original. Precise details of how to submit the portfolio will be published at or around the time when the UCAS application cycle opens. Students not based in the UK may be invited for a Skype discussion in lieu of a face-toface interview. We welcome applicants from a wide range of educational backgrounds, particularly those who have experience of both maths/science and arts/humanities. Our selection process takes into account the candidate s motivation as evidenced in his or her personal statement and at interview. We also look for creative ability as evidenced by the candidate s portfolio. Christina Duckett Admissions Tutor 5

PROGRAMME/MODULE DETAILS The programme includes both design projects and taught modules. Design projects will enable you to prepare a digital and physical portfolio, while taught modules will develop your understanding of core academic subjects and related practical skills. In first and second years all the modules are compulsory. The third year of the programme is made up of a mix of compulsory and optional modules. Core modules include the history and theory of architecture; industry and practice; construction technology; and visualisation and communication in architectural design. In your third year, you are able to choose two modules from a range of options. One of these is a career development module incorporating work experience in an architectural practice or other relevant workplace, helping you to put theory into practice, to enhance your employability, and to develop your professional network. All modules are subject to availability and may be withdrawn at the school s discretion. 6
