Racinowski, Editor/Manager St. Rita Teacher, Named Rising Star The Board of Mathematics Teachers Association of Chicago has named St. Rita High School faculty member, Josh Blaszak 02, as a Rising Star for math teachers. Blaszak, has been teaching at St. Rita, his alma mater, since 2008. I owed so much to St. Rita, they gave me such an appreciation for math, Blaszak stated. My goal is to now share the gifts I have been given with the young Ritamen I teach. Blaszak currently teaches freshmen algebra and advanced placement calculus and while being on two ends of the spectrum, Blaszak loves the diverse nature of his classroom. I get to teach the students as soon as they walk in the door as freshmen and right before they head to college; it s pretty rewarding witnessing them mature in the classroom and their lives as well. The Rising Star Award is given out annually and each recipient must be nominated by a member of the high school. Assistant Principal, Joe Partacz, nominated Blaszak for this award because of his dedication to math, but more importantly, his dedication to his students. I feel that Josh has come a long way in his teaching, Partacz said. He is an outstanding math teacher who cares about his students and their success in mathematics. It was an honor to recommend him for the Rising Star award." Blaszak and three other recipients of this award will be honored at the Mathematics Teachers Association Board Spring Dinner Meeting held on April 10th at Nazareth Academy. While Josh may be a standout mathematics teacher, he has touched the lives of young Ritamen in many different areas. He has served as the Director of Alumni and the Director of Public Relations. He has moderated the school newspaper, the math team and was the freshmen class moderator. Currently, Josh holds the roles of Assistant Director of Student Activities, Director of Kairos Retreats and is the junior class moderator. While Josh seems to spend every waking moment in the halls of St. Rita High School, he has found time to further his education. In August of 2012, Blaszak received his Masters in Education Leadership from the University of St. Francis. School principal, Brendan Conroy, speaks for the entire St. Rita family when he says, We are lucky to have Josh, but it is Blaszak who feels lucky. Being a Mathematics teacher, especially at St. Rita, is truly one of the greatest blessings in my life. Each day I enter the classroom I can honestly say I love doing what I do. Saint Gabriel Students Celebrate 100 Days! Principal Mr. Ted Morgan, first grade teacher Ms. Amy Adams and kindergarten teacher Mrs. Julie Lambert, dress up as if they were 100 as St. Gabriel celebrated 100 days of school. On Tuesday, February 19th, Saint Gabriel s kindergarten and first grade class learned all about the number one hundred. The day started off for the students with teachers Mrs. Lambert, Ms. Adams and Principal Mr. Morgan dressing up as if they were one hundred years old! The students then took a parade around the school visiting each of the classrooms. In kindergarten, the students took pictures of themselves and covered it with cotton balls to pretend they were one hundred years old. In first grade, the students made batches of trail mix with one hundred pieces in each batch. In the afternoon, both classes came back together and looked at groups of one hundred items, such as Lego s and blocks. The students grouped them together and counted to make sure there were one hundred in each group! The classes did other projects to celebrate one hundred days, such as making a paperclip chain and guessing how long it could go. The kindergartens and first graders had a fun-filled day learning about the number one hundred! -PARTISAN INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER SERVING BRIDGEPORT,, CANARYVILLEC ANARYVILLE,, ARMOURA SQUARE,, CHINATOWNC HINATOWN, M Armour Park Armour Park located at 3309 South Shields began Spring Session registration online at www.chica goparkdistrict.com. This is the third year our Youth Group visited the veterans. The teens distributed many gift bags (filled with items donated by parishioners) as veterans walked into the lobby area. Afterwards, our group went into a patient unit and visited all the veterans in their hospital rooms. It was truly a "touching" experience to see our teens interacting so well with the sick veterans and thanking them for their service to our country. We talked to veterans who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and World War II. One of the veterans even fought in the Battle of the Bulge! A number of the veterans do not receive too many visitors, so they were excited to see our youth take the time to visit and cheer them up. It was a powerful experience that our teens will never forget! Our Youth Group's theme is Making A Difference and we are doing that primarily through our Christian service to those in need. Our activities provide a great way to put our faith into action. Our next event will be a Blood Drive that we are sponsoring on Saturday, March 23rd. For more information about the group, call Fr. Rich, the moderator, at 773-268-9595. The participants were Samantha Galey, Felicia Doran, Kyle Schrama, Danie Botica, Samantha Noceda, Eleanor Caponera, Carly Thiel, Mary Margaret Allen, Scott Thiel, Matt Young, Kylie Bossard, Seamus Sjostrom, Katie Gagen, Chrissy Zanin, Natalia Almanza, Morgan Coates, Brian Swann, Mack Vanek, Mike Vanek, Izabel Soto, Makayla Steele, Mr. Soto, Ted Morgan, Penny Thiel, Char Galey, Amy Adams and Fr. Dispensa recently thanked the MWRD s Apprenticeship Program Committee for their efforts in ensuring standards were met and that Maldonado successfully completed his classroom and on the job training. Commissioner Cynthia M. Santos, Chairman of the Committee on Pension, Human Resources and Civil Service, said I am very proud whenever our employees succeed in their chosen paths. Santos went on to say Noel is only the third person to complete the machinist apprentice program. It takes commitment and dedication to complete such a rigorous course of training. Daley would like to inform Cook County residents of a new program called CountyCare. This program was designed to benefit low income residents of Cook County who need health care, but do not qualify for Medicaid, Medicare or the State s Comprehensive Health Insurance Plan. Residents between the ages of 19 and 64 who meet annual income restrictions (approximately 15 thousand for an individual, 20 thousand for a couple) now have an alternative that will provide them with essential medical services. CountyCare participants can receive both inpatient and outpatient hospital services, along with prescription drug coverage, wellness exams, and other health benefits, said Commissioner Daley. All qualified Cook County residents are encouraged to apply today. For more information, or to apply for CountyCare, call toll free at 855-444-1661. Greeting Ad Deadline is Monday at 5 PM

May Sarton Santa Lucia School News Pennies for Pets Christian Castracane (gr.7), Angel Pagan (gr.5) and Marissa Tito (gr.8) at the Anti-Cruelty Society. The students of Santa Lucia School were very happy to present the Anti-Cruelty Society of Chicago with a donation of 200. During Catholic Schools Week, a campaign started to collect money for the dogs and cats supported by this shelter. Every time a student gave a donation, their name was placed in a drawing. After two weeks, our principal, Miss Maratea picked three names from the drawing to accompany her to make the donation. On Wednesday, Feb. 27, Angel Pagan, Marissa Tito and Chris Castacane presented the check to the Director of Education at the Anti-Cruelty Society. The students were then able to tour the facility to see the care that is given to these animals that are waiting to be adopted. Many of the students contributed to the fund several times during the drive. Some brought in pennies and others contributed dollar bills. Everyone wanted to help the many animals in our city that are in need of a good home. Valentine Fun at Little Tykes Little Tykes class, 1723 W. 35th St., enjoyed celebrating Valentine's Day.
