Preface This issue contains the proceedings of the 17 th International Conference on Solid Compounds of Transition Elements (SCTE2010) held at the Imperial Hotel Convention Centre, Annecy, France, Sept. 5-10 th 2010. The conference was organised with the supports of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), the Université J. Fourier (UJF), Grenoble, the Université Bordeaux 1 (UB1). Succeeding to Paris (1965), Enschede-Twente (1967), Oslo (1969), Genève (1973), Uppsala (1976), Stuttgart (1979), Grenoble (1982), Wien (1985), Oxford (1988), Münster (1991), Wroclaw (1994), Saint-Malo (1997), Stresa (2000), Linz (2003), Krakow (2006), Dresden (2008), Grenoble and Bordeaux had the honour to organize this scientific meeting with a fine tradition in 2010. Almost 224 participants from 29 countries decided to come in the city of Annecy to present their new results on novel classes of materials containing transition elements. Chemists and physicists, specialists of material sciences, metallurgists and engineers, experimentalists and theoreticians, young and experimented researchers had a forum for direct and unimpeded discussions as well as for the the exchange of knowledge and results at the SCTE conference. The scientific program consisted of 53 oral lectures including 5 plenary lectures and 11 keynote lectures, and 203 poster presentations. About 65 contributions are presented for publication to this special issue. The program of the conference covered the topics: crystal chemistry, chemical bonding and electronic structure, magnetic and electron transport properties, thermoelectrics, hydrides, borides, carbides, silicides, germanides, pnictides, chalcogenides, complexes metallic alloys, oxides. A special Round Table dedicated to SMI and Research partnership was organised. On behalf the Organising Committee we would like to thank all those who contributed to the 17 th International Conference on Solid State Compounds of Transition Elements: the International Scientific Committee for its assistance, the Local Organizing Committee in Grenoble and Annecy that supports the important charges of secretary, treasurer and many technical tasks, thanking as well all participants and the referees. We greatly acknowledge the financial support of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Université Joseph Fourier, the Université Bordeaux 1, the Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux, the Grenoble Institut National Polytechnique, the Conseil Général de Haute-Savoie, the Mairie d Annecy, the FEDER Région Rhône-Alpes, and the SMI companies SETARAM, McPhy-Energy, Gadway.
The International Scientific Committee has decided that the 18 th International Conference on Solid Compounds of Transition Elements should be held in Lisboã, Portugal in 2012, with Pr A. Pereira Conçalves as Conference chairman. Guest Editor J.-L. Bobet Co-Chairman and Guest Editor B. Chevalier Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux Co-Chairman D.
