Cyprus airports at the ready The island s airports appear to be ready to tackle a surge in passenger traffic this year as Cyprus expects record tourist arrivals, while Cypriots travelling abroad will also increase considerably. With tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2017 already showing a 13.5% increase over the corresponding period last year, with the key UK market showing a 10% rise in reservations and Paphos alone expecting an additional 100,000 tourists, Cyprus cannot afford any problems at its airports. Add to this, the number of Cypriots travelling abroad, which, according to the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents (ACTA) president Dinos Kakkouras has already shown a 20% hike the island s two airports will have to deal with unprecedented passenger traffic. Kakkouras said some problems were experienced in 2016, where Larnaca airport saw tourist arrivals increase by 24.2% and Paphos by 2.5%, especially at peak hours when multiple flights landed at airports resulting in long queues and delays at passport control. We have voiced our concern over delays in passport and security controls experienced in 2016, but we have received assurances that this matter has been taken care of, said Kakkouras, adding that extra personnel will be available at peak times to ensure the least possible delay possible. We can t expect the problem to disappear completely, but what we do want is at least to minimise the inconvenience, said Kakkouras. Industrial unrest is another issue which seems to be have been taken care of. In July 2016, workers from Swissport and LGS stopped handling luggage which led to delays and issues at baggage reclaim due to collective agreement differences We have signed a new collective agreement with LGS and we expect to wrap things up with Swissport, too, said General Secretary of SEK s Federation of Private SEK Employees (O.I.Y.K SEK) Elissaios Michael, adding that more staff were hired to meet the increased work load The collective agreement which came into effect on May 1 will be valid until December 31, 2020.
Anastasiades admires the changing face of Paphos The face of Paphos is changing for the better, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Friday, visiting the town to inaugurate a renewed stretch of busy Tombs of the Kings Avenue. In his address, Anastasiades describes the road s improvement as one of the most important works carried out in Paphos: given that it is part of a wider road network uniting the area of Paphos airport with this tourism area and with the space where Paphos marina will be built. He also noted the network allowed travellers to by-pass the town centre, keeping the flow of traffic smooth. The works being carried out in Paphos, Anastasiades continued: have changed its face and have improved its residents daily lives. He said he was very pleased with the cooperation between government departments and other stakeholders to this end in spite of the significant pressure they are under. The new stretch encompassed 3km of the road and improvement works costing 10.5 million of which 80% was paid by the government with Paphos Municipality covering the rest. Work began in April 2013 and, by August last year, four lanes of traffic, an island in the middle of the road, pavements, a cycling path, three roundabouts, parking spaces and a drainage system, and lighting had been completed.
