Year 2016, 1.st EDITION LABGRADE Academic success and great consensus of the institutions for LABGRADE INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABLE COMPETITION &CONFERENCE from last press release, March 2016 The 1.st LABGRADE SUSTAINABLE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION edition winner was the London Team coming from the Architectural Association. LABGRADE SUSTAINABLE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION & CONFERENCE, is an Italian project at International level focusing on the main theme of Sustainability applied to the Environmental Architecture. Its first successful edition was held at the FIERAMILANO (Milano Fair premises) from Tuesday 15 to Friday 18 March 2016 in the MCE- Mostra Convegno Expocomfort- area, which was also a main partner for this event. The project involved: - a Competition among students from University International Master Courses and - a Final Conference about applied sustainability with the aim of sharing and comparing various relevant know how and methodological approaches related to sustainability, especially energetic and architectural requalification of existing buildings, thus establishing, at the same time, useful contact opportunities with the professional labor market. A four-day workshop with: practical studies, meetings with companies, brainstorming sessions with sector related professionals. The aim was to work hand in hand with International peers already operational in the field of sustainability, such as relevant Masters teachers and tutors, Special Guests, International academic representatives and International professional specialists and technicians available for any support. Such a competition and its final conference gave the opportunity to the participating Italian and European Universities to gather and start a constructive exchange on both teaching energetic-environmental sustainability methods and, above all, practical applications of relevant techniques and technologies, resulting from various countries cultural and environmental references. And all this fruitful exchange was in line with the objectives of LABGRADE and its patronage supporters: the European Union and the UNESCO.
Although the main theme was Urban Sustainable Development, the project focused on the design of an existing building for its Energetic and Architectural Requalification and Design of a new area for Collective Services. The need to operationalize the value of the proposed project and favour possible professional developments for the young participants led to the selection of a practical case-study: the analysis of an enlargement project design for an Energy-Efficient Hotel on the banks of the Como Lake. The related project proposals had to allow the use of fully autonomous and International research and calculation systems, as well as evaluation parameters. The participating Masters in Architecture and Engineering coming from European Universities, dealing with sustainability, energetic efficiency and built environment sustainability, worked for 3 days in closed session in the venue offered by the MCE (main partner) at the FIERAMILANO RHO. They focused on the best solutions for the renovation of a hotel building, respecting the binding criteria for both the Building Structure and the Historical Facade, as well as the lower consumption of Water and Energy, the respect for the Territory, the use of Innovative and Non-toxic Materials, the Mixed Practices, and the relation with the Urban Fabric. During the three-day competition Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 March 2016- the Master students were also supported by Special guests linked to the major energy certification systems, such as CasaClima, Leed, Passivhaus, selected to provide various views on different aspects of the certified sustainable project design. At the close of the 3th day, the Selection Committee listened to the presentation of all projects and proclaimed the winner.
The President of the Jury, Architect Daniela Rossi Cattaneo and winner of the prestigious European Hotel Design Award, was assisted by: - Prof. Researcher Federico Ascione, from the Federico II University of Naples, and - Prof. Matteo Civiero teaching Sustainability Strategies at the Master in Sustainability Management and Carbon Footprint from the Ca Foscari University of Venice. The winner of the First LABGRADE SUSTAINABLE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION edition was the London team coming from the Architectural Association, thus receiving a cash bonus offered by the LABGRADE Association. The British team was the best thanking to its well-balanced synthesis of analysis of the site and construction, environmental measures and innovative project proposal focusing on comfort measures, strategies to achieve a high level of natural ventilation and an architectural project open to the local public enjoyment. Special Merit was also assigned by the Selection Committee to the participating Master from the Universidad De Las Palmas De Gran Canaria, Spain. We thank the Universities for participation.
