ESM Newsletter 1/2018 Dear members of the European Society for Microcirculation, dear colleagues, The Strategy Committee of the European Society for Microcirculation (ESM) has proposed at our annual meeting in Geneva last year a newsletter to highlight ongoing and future activities of the ESM and its national societies. This is the first edition. Content 1st ESM/EVBO Summer School 2018 in Dresden 2019 joint European Society for Microcirculation (ESM) and the European Vascular Biology Organization (EVBO) meeting in Maastricht Joint Dutch German Vascular Biology meeting Amsterdam, 21-23 November 2018 Journal of Vascular Research Questionnaire to get input and support from the colleagues of the European partner societies We are looking forward to your response. Best regards, also from Akos Koller and Boy Houben, Henning Morawietz Richard Siow

Dear colleagues, It is a great pleasure to invite you to the 1 st Summer School of the European Society for Microcirculation (ESM) and the European Vascular Biology Organization (EVBO) from July 1-5, 2018 in Dresden, Germany! Microcirculation and vascular biology play a central role in cardiovascular development, function and diseases. The ESM and the EVBO want to support young investigators by establishing a Joint Summer School in the years between the Joint European Congresses. The 1st Summer School was announced at the Joint Meeting of the ESM and the EVBO in Geneva and will take place in Dresden, Germany. The programme will be supported by the ESM http://www.esmicrocirculation.eu/, the EVBO https://evbo.org/1st-summer-school-ofthe-esm-and-evbo-dresden/ and the TransCampus of TU Dresden and King s College London http://www.transcampus.eu/events. The programme of the Summer School will include method courses, renowned experts in the field as invited speakers and poster presentations by young investigators selected from the submitted abstracts. We want to attract mainly early researchers (PhD and MD students in the first three years of their research) plus a few more experienced researchers whose PhD was obtained within the last 2 years. Students from around Europe who are interested to participate can send us an abstract summarizing their project via e-mail to: Henning.Morawietz@tu-dresden.de (deadline: April 25, 2018). The 30 participants will be selected by peer-review. We are pleased to announce that the German Society for Microcirculation and Vascular Biology and the British Microcirculation Society will support Travel Awards for students of their members. In addition, the city of art, culture, and science Dresden offers a variety of cultural highlights like the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), Royal Palace, Zwinger, Semper Opera House, Albertinum, Elbe castles, or the Blue Wonder bridge. We plan an attractive social programme including a Get-together, an evening at the City Beach and an excursion to the national park Saxon Switzerland. Further information can be found on our website: https://www.uniklinikumdresden.de/medmiz/esm-evbo-summer-school. We will be very pleased to welcome you in Dresden in July 2018! Best regards, Henning Morawietz TU Dresden Richard Siow King s College London

Invitation to the 3rd joint ESM-EVBO meeting 2019 April 15 18 2019, Maastricht, Netherlands Improving vascular health is an important goal to pursue, as cardio-vascular diseases account for almost half of all deaths in Europe. Disturbances in normal (micro)vascular biology are at the basis of many diseases. From classical cardiovascular diseases, like myocardial infarction and stroke, to cardiometabolic diseases, like dementia, cognitive decline, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, and to cancer, postsurgical tissue regeneration, and wound healing. This broad range of diseases clearly underlines the need to expand our knowledge on the basic mechanisms underlying the disturbances in normal (micro)vascular biology. With this conference we aim to address many aspects of these mechanisms through state-of-the-art symposia and workshops. In particular we would like to invite young investigators to participate in this meeting. For them we create special program items, both scientifically and social. As a support we have special low registration rates and very economical hotel options. From April 15 to 18, 2019 we welcome you to Maastricht, one of the oldest and certainly most beautiful cities of the Netherlands. Maastricht has for many years a strong basis in cardiovascular research in the CARIM School for Cardiovascular Diseases, which is one of the largest cardiovascular research institutes in Europe. This, together with the warm and hospitable atmosphere of Maastricht will ensure an exciting and fruitful stay. On behalf of the national organizers: Jaap van Buul, Ed Eringa, Stephan Huveneers, and Guido Krenning. Boy Houben President of ESM Judith Sluimer EVBO Council Officer Further information can be found on the website: http://esm-evbo2019.org/ Please feel free to contact us for more information. With warm regards, on behalf of the National Organizing Committee: Jaap van Buul, Ed Eringa, Boy Houben, Stephan Huveneers, Guido Krenning, Judith Sluimer, Boy Houben

Announcement for Joint Dutch German Vascular Biology meeting Amsterdam, 21-23 November 2018. Dear Colleagues, We are delighted to announce the second joint meeting between the German Society for Microcirculation and Vascular Biology, and the Dutch vascular biology societies, to be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands on 21-23 November 2018. The registration website is now open to receive your registration and abstract submissions at: www.debsociety.nl. Our meeting will bring together investigators from all fields of vascular biology for the exchange of new concepts and discussions of outstanding questions in the field. Presentations of the latest discoveries will be provided by internationally recognized scientists and emerging young stars (see the attached flyer). Topics addressed include angiogenesis, arteriogenesis, atherosclerosis, inflammation, lymphatics, mechanosensing, cytoskeleton dynamics, neuro-vascular interactions, redox, hypoxia and metabolism, leukocyte biology, coronary adaptations, and non-coding RNAs in regenerative medicine. Special lectures will address novel developments in the field of systems biology including the RNA tomograph, single cell sequencing, emerging ips technologies and novel high-end imaging modalities for studying cellular behaviors. The program can be downloaded at: www.debsociety.nl Our meeting is supported by the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) and German Cardiac Society (DGK). Members of young DZHK are eligible for travel grants, please consult your local Standort manager. Additional travel grants and prices will be awarded based on abstract submissions. In particular we would like to draw your attention to the Aletta Jacobs symposium dedicated to excellent female scientists. Here we like to particularly encourage female scientists at the start of their career to submit a contribution to the young investigator award session. For established researchers the Hermann Rein Award for excellent contributions to the field of experimental and clinical research in microcirculation and vascular biology will be awarded. This award is open to both the Dutch and German community and instructions on how to apply will follow in due time. Amsterdam, besides being in a hub for scientific research, and culture with many famous musea including the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum, can be easily reached: direct flight and train connections exist between Amsterdam and major cities in Germany. The organization aims at providing an exciting scientific and social program, promoting a warmhearted ambiance, accommodating initiation of collaborative efforts, and exchanging ideas and cultural values.
