VANCOUVER HERITAGE FOUNDATION 2002 A N N U A L R E P O R T

M E S S A G E F R O M T H E C H A I R Having seen the Vancouver Heritage Foundation grow over the past 11 years, it is a real honour to take on the role of chair. The foundation has established itself through its programs and profile as an important part of the heritage community in Vancouver. With True Colours, the Heritage and Antiques Fair, Restore It! grants, the Leslie Lane House rehabiliation, Timothy Richard s City Hall model, plus publications, workshops and more, the board and its Executive Director Diane Switzer have an impressive list of accomplishments. Open Vancouver is sold out and promises to be the first of many successful tours, giving people a chance to see inside some of the lovingly restored heritage houses in the city. The pride that has gone into these homes dispells the sentiment that heritage is not worth the effort. With the VHF s proven track record, I am confident that our efforts to raise funds for our endowment will be equally successful. I am pleased to be part of such a dynamic and rewarding organization. ~ Robert Lemon MAIBC, Chair ABOUT THE VHF committed group of volunteer Directors provides community based A leadership to the Foundation. They are assisted by an Exectuvie Director, contracted professionals when needed and an able core of almost 100 special event volunteers. The Foundation is sincerely grateful for the generous contribution of the volunteers. Without their donation of time and expertise the implementation of our programs would not be possible. The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is a charitable, not-for-profit organization committed to the preservation of Vancouver s built heritage in recognition of its public benefit through: Growing an endowment fund at the Vancouver Foundation to benefit the preservation of heritage builidngs. Providing grants to heritage buildings that are an economic incentive for restoration. Developing education and awareness activities to raise public interest in Vancouver s built heritage. GRANT PROGRAMS Providing economic incentive to heritage building owners for the maintenance and restoration of their buildings. The granting programs of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation also act as catalysts for neighbouring building owners to also fix up their buildings. Once one house in a streetscape is painted in True Colours, other homeowners often follow suit giving an authentic look for historic neighbourhoods from Kitsilano to Strathcona. TRUE COLOURS Historical Vancouver True Colours Colour Card Pendrell Red, Strathcona Mahogany, Kitsilano Gold, Dunbar Buff, Vancouver Green, Point Grey... These are some of the colours in the new Historical Vancouver True Colours colour card. The colour card was launched during Heritage Week, in February 2003 and is available at Benjamin Moore retailers at a cost of 1.00. Proceeds will go to support the work of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation. Historical Vancouver True Colours Colour Card The first program of its kind in North America, True Colours is an exterior paint granting program that has painted twenty houses over four years in their original and authentic colour schemes and developed a palette of 35 colours true to the history of Vancouver. Architectural elements from siding, to window trim, brackets and porch details of each house are scraped down. The colours are analyzed and matched, and the paint is provided free of charge by corporate partner, Benjamin Moore Co. & Limited. The homeowners receive a grant to assist with labour costs. In return, the homeowners agree to protect their properties through legal heritage designation, ensuring that the buildings will not be demolished or significantly altered. GRANT PROGRAMS RESTORE IT! In its inaugural round of granting, Restore It! awarded grants to 5 buildings. Restore It! provides grants for the maintenance and restoration of the exterior fabric of heritage houses. Partial funding is provided for projects such a re-roofing, foundation and masonry work, restoration of porches and front stairs and the restoration of original siding and windows. The homeowners agree to legally protect their building to prevent its demolition or significant alteration in the future. In the late Fall of 2002, Restore It! grants were awarded to projects that will be undertaken in the spring and summer of 2003. Re-roofing at 312 Union Street and 641 East Georgia Street in Strathcona, and at 2647 Manitoba in Mount Pleasant. The restoration of the North exterior balustrades and staircase at Hycroft at 1489 McRae in Shaughnessy. The authentic restoration of Victorian details on the front facades of houses at 1157-1169 Pendrell Street in Mole Hill. The Vancouver Heritage Foundation awarded a special project grant to DOCOMOMO.BC an international society committed to the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement. Since 2000, DOCOMOMO has been working to complete a CD-ROM documenting British Colombia modernism. The CD-ROM includes important archival images, profiles of leading architects, and a timeline of works, maps and background information. The CD-ROM is available from the Vancouver Heritage Foundation at a cost of 30.00. BC.MOMO CD-ROM cover 4

EDUCATION PROGRAMS The Vancouver Heritage Foundation develops education and awareness activities to raise public interest in heritage buildings and to provide building owners with information and resources to assist them with the restoration and maintenance of their buildings. In 2002 we successfully reached out to almost 5000 Vancouverites through our education and awareness programs. HERITAGE and ANTIQUES FAIR June 14-16, 2002 People browsed through exhibits of antiques while others waited to appraise their attic treasures. Some watched the almost lost crafts of wicker, cane and rush work, gilding a frame, washing antique fabrics or repairing a Persian carpet. The Vancouver Heritage Foundation s 3rd Heritage & Antiques Fair, under the direction of talented co-chairs, Mamie Angus and Robert Lemon, brought antiques and restoration experts, businesses and professionals in the field of heritage restoration, and thousands of interested Vancouverites together under one roof. The theme was Deco Decade: Vancouver in the 30 s. The Art Deco stage was set when the Fair was officially opened by over 200 people at the Fair s Opening Benefit. The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the exquisite model of the Art Deco Vancouver City Hall building by donors Jake and Judy Kerr. Heritage & Antiques Fair postcard Appraiser evaluates patron s antiques Bird s eye view of booths at the fair The Art Deco theme was carried on throughout the weekend on the Seminar Stage with slide presentations showcasing Vancouver s stock of 1930 s buildings and bridges and on the darker side of life in the Dirty Thirties. Ivan Sayers awed a huge crowd with his social commentary on life in Vancouver during the 30 s through the eyes of fashion. T h a n k y o u t o o u r s p o n s o r s : 5

EDUCATION PROGRAMS COLOUR IN THE CITY ~ Workshop October 3-5, 2002 A public lecture, a one-day workshop and a bus tour were all part of this conference on historic paint colour in North America. It was co-sponsored by the Vancouver Heritage Foundation, the Vancouver Museum and SFU City Program. Susan Buck, a historic paint expert from Delaware, Maryland presented her research on the colour of American landmarks such as Mount Vernon, Monticello and Williamsburg while the local research on historic Vancouver colour was presented by Don Luxton. A Saturday morning bus tour highlighted the houses painted in the historically accurate True Colours paint palette through the Vancouver Heritage Foundation s True Colours grant program. RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT and PUBLIC AWARENESS LESLIE LANE HOUSE ~ Restoration Project O ne of Vancouver s last remaining lane houses was rescued by the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and moved in early July, 2002, to a new site at 1117 Pendrell Street in Mole Hill, a West End heritage neighbourhood. The move, restoration and sale of the house is a demonstration and fundraising project for the Foundation. Leslie Lane House being transferred to it s new location in Mole Hill The front of Leslie Lane House The relocation of the Leslie Lane House allows the Foundation to restore the small home s exterior and renovate its interior for re-sale as a contemporary two unit strata. The century-old cottage stood in the lane behind Umberto Menghi s wellknown yellow house restaurant at 1380 Hornby Street. To make way for new development Mr. Menghi donated the house and partial costs of its relocation. The little Victorian cottage began life as a stable and was soon framed in for use as living quarters by the original owner George Leslie, a plasterer. Over the years it was occupied by a series of tradespeople until it became home to Leslie Interiors in the 1940 s and then Mano Herendy s couturier business in the 1960 s and 1970 s. Since the late 1970 s it has been part of Umberto Menghi s restaurants. 6

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT and PUBLIC AWARENESS WHAT STYLE IS MY HOUSE? In partnership with the Victoria Heritage Foundation, BC Heritage Trust, Heritage Society of BC, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation published the sixth in the This Old House series. Through illustrations and photos the booklet helps to explain how to differeniate between an Edwardian and a craftsman house and how to identify a soffit, a bracket or other architectural elements of an house. The booklet is meant to inform homeowners and help them to become familiar with the terminology used by heritage professionals and found in the heritage conservation literature. EXHIBIT AND SALE OF CITY HALL MODEL Technical Pamphlet # 6 Styles Guide Commissioned by the Vancouver Heritage Foundation through a generous donation from Jake & Judy Kerr, the model of Vancouver Ar t Moderne City Hall is the work of world renowned model maker Timothy Richards. Mr. Richards was in town from England for the Heritage & Timothy Richards plaster model of Vancouver s Art Moderne City Hall building Antiques Fair in 2002 to speak about his work and to sign the limited editions of the model. Designed by architects Townley and Matheson and completed in 1936 as a symbol of Vancouver s growth, City Hall is a prime example of Ar t Moderne design. Its geometric silhouette, stylized banks of ornamentation, elegant light fixtures and the ornate lobby are characteristic elements of this style. The model is available for sale at the Vancouver Musem Gift Shop with all proceeds going to the Foundation. The model, formed of plaster, lead and etched brass, is of the north entrance of the building. It was designed as an exact replica using the original architectural plans and detailed photographs. SALVAGED TERRACOTTA Nursing Sisters re-mounted at UBC T hree terracotta nursing sisters in First World War uniforms once graced the 10th floor of the Medical Dental Building on Georgia. When the building was demolished in 1989, after intense public pressure to save the landmark structure, the decorative terracotta fragments and figures were given to the Vancouver Heritage Foundation to be used for fundraising. The huge eleven foot high nursing sisters were recently purchased by Discovery Parks Trust and mounted on the second floor of a medical research facility at UBC. After a tremendous restoration effort by Discovery Parks, the nurses are once again mounted on a building for public enjoyment. The terracotta figures and fragments were sold through the VHF as a fundraiser and can now be found as decorative pieces in gardens and houses throughout the city. 7
