Prof. Fernando Vegas Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain fvegas@cpa.upv.es Prof. Camilla Mileto Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain cami2@cpa.upv.es Fernando Vegas and Camilla are architects and professors at the Universitat Politècnica of València (Spain), where they teach in the Graduate and the Master Program in Architectural Conservation at the Universitat Politecnica of Valencia. Their courses at Valencia focus on conservation theory, criteria and techniques and contemporaneous design concepts and criteria. They have made several studies, projects and interventions for the preservation of the Alhambra of Granada, among other monuments of Spain and other countries. They are Unitwin partners of the UNESCO Chair for Earthen Architecture, Constructive Cultures and Sustainable Development. They have got several national and international awards for their work on architectural preservation and published widely in the field. http://resarquitectura.blogs.upv.es/?lang=en Facebook: Res-Arquitectura / Restauración Arquitectónica / Architectural Preservation

She graduated in Architecture, PhD in Interior Architecture and Exhibition design. Her research focus on interior architecture, museography, heritage and museum studies.
Architectural Preservation Studio Scuola di Architettura Urbanistica Ingegneria delle Costruzioni Politecnico di Milano a.a- 2016-2017 Architectural Preservation: Proff. Fernando Vegas with Camilla Mileto Building Physics: Prof. Rajendra Singh Adhikari Interiors: Prof. Francesca Lanz Rationale: Through theoretical lectures and design exercises, and by focusing on a traditional Architecture case study, the course is aimed at providing students with skills pertaining to the preservation and adaptive reuse design of historical buildings. The course of Architectural Preservation Studios will be coordinated with that of Interior Architecture and Building Physics.
Traditional architecture...landscapes, town centres and settlements, residential or collective, rural or urban, modest or monumental, public and private buildings and infrastructures, connected to dwelling, storage, exploitation or preindustrial production...born and linked to their place of origin, constructed with the building materials and methods available before mechanised transport came into being...teaches us an important lesson in sustainability in relation with adaptation to the environment, economic optimisation, close connection with social and cultural organisation...it is therefore an architecture that deserves attention, study and conservation as our architectonic and cultural heritage.
Architectural Preservation A traditional building selected by the teachers shall be studied from several different points of view. The study shall deal with all the aspects that characterise traditional architecture from a historical, technical, constructive, social, landscapist and functional point of view, and others. The practical task proposed consists in as realistic a development as possible of the restoration study and project process of a traditional building.
Students, organised in small/medium size groups will develop a preliminary study to become familiar with the building with the detail and precision required in order to plan a suitable intervention. This will be targeted at developing a restoration project paying special attention to the criteria and the development of certain aspects of the intervention (structural consolidation, intervention on damp, functionality, etc.) that may have arisen during the study phase.
Module : Building Physics The section related to Building Physics will provide students the concepts and the tools useful for the development of an environmental conscious approach in energy retrofit. It will mainly deal with the essential aspects related to designing of building envelope and, energy supply systems for thermal and visual comfort in built environment and their appropriate integration into buildings. Special emphasis will be given on the rational use of energy, renewable energy and environmental impact in the design selection for energy retrofit of existing buildings.
Interiors During the course, students will be also invited at approaching the project through the lens of interior architecture. Interior architecture indeed, far from being a mere completion of the architectural design, a matter of decoration or furnishing, it is rather an actual design method and a particular approach to the project, which has a remarkable tradition in the reuse of existing buildings nurtured by outstanding examples. Drawing on these premises and considering the existing building, its history and architectural identity as a sources of suggestions, students will be guided toward the reuse project which moves from the interior.
