Halsted St. Chicago, IL. 60609 May is Better Hearing and Speech Month An Opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders... COMMUNICATION TAKES CARE! The John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Hosts Ricobene's Night TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY MAY 18, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation will host Ricobene's Night at 252 West 26th Street, 312-225-5555. John was just a sophomore at St. Rita, looking forward to the start of the baseball season when a malignant inoperable brain tumor was diagnosed in April of 2010. Though he fought a courageous battle, he died the following January 2011. Through their grief his parents started this foundation in his memory to raise money to fund research to a grossly underfunded segment of pediatric cancers. Please visit www.livelikejohn.org to learn more. Today, children diagnosed with brain cancer are treated with the same drugs and therapies that existed 30 years ago; there have been no new advancements. With the Bench to Bedside program, the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is setting out to change that. In 2015, the foundation provided $500,000 to fund a research team of the best & brightest minds in the field. To date the foundation has raised over $700,000.00. Every dollar goes to research!!!! This dream team of doctors and researchers is committed to studying high-grade gliomas - the deadliest and most common form of brain tumor. With a multi-disciplinary approach, these doctors cover the entire range of the research process - from extracting tissue samples and developing new therapies, to exploring novel delivery techniques that are safer and more effective for children. These doctors are leading the charge on new therapies and treatment options, and will bring their best findings to our children's bedsides through life-changing clinical trials. In order to maintain this aggressive approach, the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation must raise another $500,000 in 2016. This is just one of a host of fundraisers that is helping the Bench to Bedside initiative. Please visit www.live likejohn.org to learn more. All we need is your Ricobene s receipt. When ordering say this is for the John McNicholas Brain Tumor Foundation fundraiser. Take the evening off from cooking and come have dinner at Ricobene s. A percentage of all proceeds/receipts collected will go to the John McNicholas Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. If you are unable to come out, you can also place an order for delivery or pick up, just mention the Foundation and we will get the credit. Eat great food and help make a difference!! As always thank you for your continued support for a very worthwhile cause. May Crowning The children of Saint Jerome School continued an age-old tradition by participating in the annual May Crowning Ceremony. The 1st Communicants processed into church followed by the junior high students who formed a living rosary around the faithful. Prayers dedicated to the Blessed Virgin were said and beautiful songs honoring the Blessed Mother, were sung. The statue of Mary was then crowned with a wreath of flowers by Izabela Leja, who was assisted by Will Babich.

While it s true that Bridgeport isn't one of the world's best locations for birding, taking time to notice the birds in our environment is still worthwhile.especially in these beautiful spring and summer months, animal life is surprisingly abundant in our community and getting to know your neighborhood birds can be relaxing, educational & rewarding. This column aims to give its readers some tips for birding in Bridgeport. The first step in birding is noticing the birds around you. Our fellow Chicago denizens, the pigeons (known by birders as Rock Doves ), are an excellent bird to first become acquainted with. Many city dwellers disregard pigeons as rats with wings, but such a characterization does not give this noble bird the humanity it deserves. Next time you are walking the streets of Bridgeport, take a good look at a pigeon. Notice its body shape, its size, the shape of its beak, and its coloring. The bird you are looking at may be the classic blue/black phenotype, or perhaps white with black speckles. Upon a closer look, you may find that what you first thought was a pigeon is actually a Mourning Dove; a bird smaller than a Rock Dove which is rufous in color and is more likely to be found on fence posts and telephone wires than on the ground. Notice the way pigeons fly and the silhouette their wings and tails make against the sky. A good next step, once you have spent a few days taking note of the pigeons in your area, is befriending a pigeon. Pick a pigeon with a distinctive appearance close to your house. Take note of its behavior- is it social with other birds? Does it prefer to spend time a tree, on the ground or on wires? Does it appear to be male or female? (Note: you can determine sex when pigeons are courting; the males chase the females). If you watch the behavior of your bird enough you ll notice he or she has a lot of personality! Once you ve become acquainted with your bird, look for it again next time you re in the same place. Chances are, especially if it s the same time of day, your pigeon will be there again! Pigeons like to stay close to home and live for several years. If you throw it a sunflower seed you ll have made a new friend in the neighborhood. Thanks for checking out The Bridgeport News Birder! My goal is to encourage my fellow Bridgeport residents to start birding, to notice and appreciate the natural world around them, and to enjoy themselves doing so! Look out for the next edition of the column for profiles of local birds, plus more tips for getting started. If you have any comments about the column, questions about birding, or requests regarding future subject matter, don t hesitate to write at topo.chico @uchicago.edu.
