SHORT BIOGRAPHY Martin Dubbeling (1961) is a senior consultant, urban planner and urban designer in Assen, the Netherlands. He is an active practitioner in the fields of spatial planning, urban planning, landscape architecture and the environment in the Netherlands and abroad. Martin Dubbeling is Vice President Urban Planning Advisory Teams (UPATs) of the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP). For ISOCARP Martin Dubbeling is responsible for and organised UPAT workshops in Singapore (2010), Wuhan (2012), Perm (2012), Shantou (2013), Nanjing (2013) and Gaza (2015) and the West Bank (2015). Martin Dubbeling is one of the authors of the best selling book Sustainable Urban Design, Perspectives and Examples (2005), for which he was awarded with the Gerd Albers Award on the 42nd ISOCARP Congress in Istanbul in 2006. The second and revised edition of this book is published in September 2010. Martin Dubbeling was Rapporteur and member of the Congress Team on the 45th ISOCARP congress Low Carbon Cities in Porto in 2009, rapporteur of the Philips Liveable Cities UPAT in Singapore in 2010 and Young Planning Professionals workshop coordinator prior to the 46th ISOCARP congress Sustainable City - Developing World in Nairobi in 2010. He has written well-received articles about the relation between energy transition and spatial and urban planning and about urban planning in China in the ISOCARP Reviews 05, 07 and 09. Martin Dubbeling studied Urban Planning and Design at the Delft University of Technology (1981-1988). He was guest tutor and guest lecturer at several universities and he has a strong professional record in the consultancy, design and process of the regeneration of historic town and village centres, sustainable urban planning and design and the redevelopment of urban networks and retail districts. He was and is responsible for several master plans for sustainable residential areas and sustainable residential urban renewal in the Netherlands. During and right after his studies in Delft (1985-1993), Martin Dubbeling worked as a free-lancer and guest tutor at the Faculty of Architecture, TU Delft. He was partner in APPEL, an office for urban planning and architecture. He joined BügelHajema Adviseurs (1993-1999), office for regional planning, urban design, landscape architecture and the environment with branches in Assen, Leeuwarden and Amersfoort where, in 1997 at the age of 36, he became director in finance and professional development. He moved to KuiperCompagnons (1999-2005), office for urban planning and design, landscape architecture and architecture, as head of the Arnhem branch and member of the Management Team. Later he moved his team of assistant designers to SAB (2006-2012), office for regional planning, urban design, landscape architecture and the environment with branches in Arnhem, Amsterdam and Eindhoven. In 2013 Martin Dubbeling started Connecting Cities, an office for research, consultancy, design and communication in sustainable urban and regional planning.
