GLOUCESTER PLACE A NOBLE ADDRESS Gloucester Place has always been a fashionable place to reside First laid out in the 1810s, Gloucester Place was named after the brother of King George III, the Duke of Gloucester, and today forms one of the most extensive concentrations of Grade II-listed houses in London. Gloucester Place is within easy walking distance of Regent s Park and Hyde Park, as well as being close to Baker Street and the West End, and just a short stroll from the University of Westminster and Oxford Street, the most famous shopping street in all Europe. Did you know? Victorian sensationalist novelist Wilkie Collins and prominent poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning both lived in Gloucester Place. 6

THE HEIGHT OF SOPHISTICATION The street scene from the top floor 9

MARYLEBONE Centre of attraction Vibrant Marylebone is one of the city s smartest districts Stretching from Oxford Street to Regent s Park, Marylebone is an affluent central postcode, a fashionable destination and a very liveable area. Chic restaurants and cafés stand side-by-side with independent boutiques and designer stores on one of the prettiest high streets in London; while diverse attractions draw visitors to investigate the Sherlock Holmes Museum, catch a match at Lord s or spot celebrities at Madame Tussauds. 10

Did you know? The area takes its name from a church dedicated to St Mary on the Tybourne stream. Over time, it became known as St Mary at the Bourne, eventually shortened to Marylebone, or St Marylebone to purists. 11

TRANSPORT Well connected From Gloucester Place, it s easy to get around London and beyond London may be one of Europe s largest cities but its transport system is extensive. Gloucester Place is just a three-minute walk from Baker Street Underground station, with five lines that connect to the West End, City, North and West London; Marble Arch on the Central Line is just a little further. Regular services connect to Heathrow Airport (30 mins) and the Eurostar Terminal at St Pancras (8 mins). Nearby Marylebone mainline station has direct services to Birmingham and the Midlands. Being so central, you ll find yourself relying on the numerous buses, black cabs or even using the citywide Cycle Hire scheme to get around. And escaping by car is a breeze, with nearby Marylebone Road taking you directly to the M25 ring road and M40 to the West. Did you know? London built the world s first underground railway between Paddington to Farringdon via Baker Street on today s Metropolitan line. The original platforms are still in use. 12

LONDON Endless fascination London turns on the charm For a city that s been a centre of importance for 2,000 years, London juggles the past and the present with surprising ease. When you ask people across the world what they associate with the city, they re just as likely to say fashion, shopping and cool as they are to say royalty, theatre and Big Ben. Whether it s wandering around the trendsetting streets of Spitalfields and Shoreditch in the East End, perusing antiques in Mayfair or the luxury stores of Sloane Street, London is constantly surprising, dynamic, creative and full of energy. Did you know? London s four World Heritage Sites are the Tower of London, Kew Gardens, Westminster (the Abbey and Houses of Parliament), and Greenwich (Royal Naval College and Observatory). 23
