photo: Heinrich Helfenstein photo: Knapkiewicz & Fickert Four Apartments Wiesenstrasse 5 8400 Winterthur This small, yet intriguingly complex building is irritating The body of the three-storey liverwurst-coloured block is folded several times as it traces the boundary lines of the property It seems compact, but projects oddly: the top storey has a triangular terrace cutting into its volume and spreading it apart, two low annexes connect to the property next door, and various window formats are distributed without any apparent logic Elegant it is not At the recessed entrance, white marble frames the door - a moderately representative touch heralding the staccato beyond: a chequerboard of red and white marble covers the floor From both outside and inside, it is almost impossible to understand the way the different flats interlock without looking at the plan; it is an assemblage of scenes rahter than an integrated whole Nevertheless, no one entering the building can remain indifferent It is as if several generations already lived here; what bigger compliment can we give a house? photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Project is not public! 2005 Knapkiewicz & Fickert AG Kaschka Knapkiewicz Axel_Simon http://wwwmimoaeu/users/ericarod3/guides/stein%20am%20rhein/ 2
