The Technical Faculty at Lund University in Lund provides excellent resources for studying diverse aspects of sustainability and design. The Department of Architecture and Built Environment has a well established reputa on for developing humanis c values in modern designs by promo ng liveability, inclusiveness and social sustainability. Design projects as well as theore cal courses in the masters programme are carried out in close collabora on with a number of facul es, private actors and public ins tu- ons such as Landscape Architecture at SLU Alnarp, Malmö City Planning Office, Faculty of Engineering at LTH and the Ax:son Johnson Ins tute for Sustainable Urban Design at Lund University. Lund also has the huge advantage of being located in the dynamic Öresund region, a global leader in balancing urban economic growth and environmental conserva on. A clean environment is a top priority in Denmark and Sweden alike, and both countries are recognised around the world for their strong environmental stand. Peter Siöström ass. O V E R V I E W The Masters degree programme in Sustainable Urban Design aims at producing highly skilled and crea ve professionals capable of making the world s growing ci es into healthy, a rac ve and sustainable places. The two-year studio-based course of study equips students to manifest their social, economic and environmental inten ons into spa al design. Drawing on best prac ces and advanced research into in urban form, urban quality, and sustainability, students design new neighbourhoods for decaying urban districts as well as improved structures for regional landscapes. Study trips to interes ng urban design developments in Europe provide opportuni es for students to learn from both historic precedents and the newest prac ces. Students develop analy cal and cri cal skills, as well as their use of relevant representa onal and communica ve techniques. They are also introduced to tools and policies for successful implementa- on of urban design The Ax:son Johnson Ins tute for Sustainable Urban Design at Lund University augment the course of study by invi ng interna onally recogni- 4 S U S T A I N A B L E U R B A N D E S I G N

Graduate students are expected to go on to professional careers in private architectural studios or city planning offices, applying their knowledge and skills in prac cal expert tasks related to sustainable urban design. Lund University unites long-standing tradi ons with a modern, dynamic and highly interna onal profile. With eight facul es, and a number of research centres and specialised ins tutes, Lund University is the biggest provider of research and higher educa on in Sweden. It was founded in 1666 and is one of the oldest universi es in northern Europe. At present, nearly 38,000 undergraduate and 2,300 postgraduate students are enrolled at Lund University. Lund is located in southern Sweden, right next door to Denmark. The Danish-Swedish Øresund Region is one of Europe s most dynamic areas. In Lund, abroad is close by: a trip by train or car to the largest Scandinavian city, Copenhagen, takes only 40 minutes over the Øresund Bridge, while Malmö, the third largest city in Sweden, is only a 15-minute train ride away. Lund is well known for its dynamic student life, and tradi onal student socie- es, organising ac vi es to suit every taste. The dominance of the student popula on, and the wide range of students associa ons and organisa ons enrich the cultural climate of both the University and the city.lund University does not charge tui on fees. Students are only responsible for their own living expenses, books, materials and miscellaneous cost. S C H O O L O F A R C H I T E C T U R E 5

E D U C A T I O N The master programme in Sustainable Urban Design deals with difficult situa- ons in complex environments. As this is an advanced level programme, studies requires a high level of independent work, where students take responsibility for their own learning process. It is important for students to keep an open and lively discussion about their work with teaching staff as well as with fellow students. The core element of the master programme in SUDes is the design studio where the students will carry out qualified urban design projects supported by weekly sketches and workshops around various themes related to sustainable urban design 6 S U S T A I N A B L E U R B A N D E S I G N

E D U C A T I O N Support for the design assignment is also provided by the knowledge and theore cal content included in parallel courses. The parallel courses consist of lectures and text seminars with theore cal input in various fields concerning different aspects on sustainability as well as inspra onal exampels of urban renewal. The urban design projects are evaluated and discussed by an examina on team comprised of interna onally recognised visi ng cri cs together with the course examiner and teaching staff. S C H O O L O F A R C H I T E C T U R E 7

E D U C A T I O N An important factor in the educa on is that the students get an opportunity to show and discuss their work outside the school. Students projects are o en publicly displayed and discussed with poli cians and city planning staff in the municipali es concerned. The press is usually invited to these events. 8 S U S T A I N A B L E U R B A N D E S I G N

E D U C A T I O N A study trip each semester is a vital part of the educa on and aims to broaden the student s view on architecture and urban design and to give the group a common pla orm for future discussions. Trips have been made to Amsterdam to study historical and modern urban structures, and to the Edinburgh & Glasgow region where Edinburgh s Old Town and Craig s New Town are both outstanding examples of classical European urbanism. The most recent tour went to Shanghai where students studied the rapid development in China and took part in the World Urban Forum 4 in Nanjing. S C H O O L O F A R C H I T E C T U R E 9
