FIRST TELEPHONE IN EDMONTON >The people of Edmonton, St. Albert, and Fort Saskatchewan drew up a petition in 1882-1883 requesting the connection of the 3 communities by telephone. >They contacted the Bell Telephone agent in Winnipeg, who felt that Edmonton was not yet large enough to warrant an exchange. >Alex Taylor proposed acquiring the instruments necessary to establish a private system connecting the instruments to the telegraph line. >In the spring of 1884, Parliament approved the $675 necessary to build the Edmonton - St. Albert line. Poles were supplied by the people, and the shipping, labour, instruments, porcelain insulators, and wire were paid for with money from the government. >In January, 1885, Alex Taylor made the first call from his new telegraph office to McKenney's store and residence in St. Albert. >A second telephone line was run from Alex Taylor's telegraph office to the Hudson's Bay Company s office in Fort Edmonton.

1912 ELECTRICITY 600 B.C. Thales of Miletus writes about amber becoming charged by rubbing - he was describing what we now call static electricity. 1600 English scientist, William Gilbert first coined the term "electricity" from the Greek word for amber 1880s and 1890s, Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge all struck deals with local entrepreneurs to provide electricity to their respective cities. In all three cases, the population boom of the early 1900s put tremendous strains on the existing systems and raised a contentious debate about the relative merits of public versus private ownership of utilities.
