Grove Cemetery Townland: Grove / Tullaghanbroge Parish: Danesfort Ownership: KK Co. Co. Rothe House No: TG09a BG No: 176 RMP No: 23-30-02 Geolocation: E 645230, N 650135 (ITM) 52.600599, -7.332323 (WGS 84) Recorded by: Mrs Clare Murphy and Mrs Margaret M. Phelan Survey Date: August 1974 Foreword: The parish church of Tullaghanbroge now generally called Grove is a substantial ruin. Only one tomb is from the 16 th Century, that belonging to St. Leger and Comerford family in the church, noted by Carrigan (Vol. III, p 385) and illustrated in an article by M. M. Phelan in Old Kilkenny Review No. 21, 1969. The other tomb mentioned by Carrigan, a coffin shaped slab with raised cross which was beside the Church door, on the outside, is not now to be seen. The graveyard was cleaned up and tidied just before the death of Fr James Cassin (who is buried with his people in Tomb No. 9). This gave the tomb readers a much needed opportunity to read the stones though some are lying with the inscription down. None is earlier than 1700 when David Hoban s was erected. This stone and 4 others have raised lettering and are exceptionally nicely executed and may have been the product of a local stone cutter of talent. The other 4 are Tombs 94, 95, 98 and 115. The places and townlands mentioned on the stones are Ballymack, Dowrath, Brownstown, Foxcover, Desert, Grove, Ballykeeffe, Ballycallan, Knockavalla, Callan, Ahenraheen, Old Racecourse, Grovine, Clashwilliam, Coalaponge, Rylands, Garrynaman, Goldenfield, Tennakeely, Tullaroan, Burnchurch, Ballybur, Coolnabrone, Graigooly, Aughitanne, Castleinch, Aughany, Aninderry, Kilcar, Sunhill, Carhan or Caron. The writers feel that when the City of Kilkenny is mentioned, the person commemorated was probably a businessman (shop keeper) in Kilkenny. The Rices seem to be the most numerous family commemorated. Tomb No. 71 belongs to the founder of the Club House, Kilkenny - Mr James Rice of Burnchurch who died in 1825 and must have been host for all the great days of the Kilkenny Theatre (1802-1819). The Hobans of Desart are buried here too, the earliest is David Hobans 1700 (Tomb No 10). James Hoban, architect of the White House in Washington D.C. is of this family, a grand-nephew of his is

commemorated on Tomb No. 9, Andrew Hoban. He had fought for the Pope against Garibaldi in 1860. The Cassins commemorated on this tomb (No.9) are collateral descendants.
