CITIZENS PLANNING COUNCIL Accession No. 4543-1 GUIDE The Citizens Planning Council was established on June 20, 1961. Its goals were to inform citizens about planning and to involve them in the planning process. It also functioned as a lobbying group, supporting citizens interests before local and regional planning agencies. Specific efforts were primarily directed at transit issues. The CPC strongly opposed the construction of new freeways including the I-90/3 rd Lake Washington Bridge Projects, the R. H. Thomson Expressway, and the Bay Freeway. These records were initially accessioned as Robert Eyre s Papers. Eyre was president of the CPC from mid-1965 to 1972. The name change reflects the fact that many of the papers seem to have been inherited by Eyre and pre-date his involvement with the CPC. The accession also contains papers from several similar groups with which Eyre was involved (Citizens Against the R.H. Thomson, Citizens for Clean Air) which are in separate subgroups. Personal papers, many of which pertain to the 1965 White House Conference on Natural Beauty which Eyre attended at the invitation of President Johnson, comprise another subgroup. Most of the clippings and photographs included in the accession come from the files of Anne Hauberg, a local arts supporter who was affiliated with numerous groups interested in the beautification of Seattle. Hauberg was one of the founding members of CPC but seems to have been actively involved for only a short time after the group began. However, her ideas about community aesthetics seem to have had a lasting influence on the group s direction. Hauberg s papers which are not directly linked to the CPC are filed in the Hauberg subgroup. These records were donated to the Libraries by Robert Eyre s daughter, Megan Eyre, in 1996. They were processed in 1996 and measure 5.42 cubic feet.
