Transcription:

: 23 25 October 2011 VISUAL Centre For Contemporary Art & The George Bernard Shaw Theatre, Carlow Riding out the Storm Survival, Renewal and Recovery This year s RIAI conference focuses on how architects can adapt to the current crisis; what are the inherent strengths and weaknesses in Irish architecture; and how can the profession, and the RIAI capitalise on the strengths and reputation of Irish architecture to develop strategies for renewal and recovery in the years ahead. The 2009 RIAI strategic review explored how architects might address the challenges of today s crisis. One outcome of the process was the conviction that while architects are currently in a very difficult place, we are positive in our determination to contribute to the wider debate about paths to national recovery, and how architecture might develop positive initiatives for the future. There was a consensus that less work should not mean fewer ideas, but rather the opposite; the current recession offers a time for reflection on both the successes and failures of the past, and the resulting Action Plan 2010-13 sets out 11 key policy objectives for survival, renewal and recovery, not only of the profession but of Ireland as a whole. This year s RIAI conference expands on these themes under the title Riding out the Storm Survival, Renewal and Recovery. A range of leading keynote speakers will address the aspects of today s challenges, and thought provoking panel discussions will examine how architects and architecture can contribute to a vision for the future. Paul Keogh, President

SUNDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2011 2 Structured CPD Points 1500 Conference Registration Carlow Visual Centre 1600 Conference Registration 1700 Opening Address Paul Keogh President RIAI 1715 Critical Regionalism Six Points towards an Architecture of Resistance Keynote Speaker: Kenneth Frampton, Professor of Architecture, Columbia University Kenneth Frampton s seminal essay, and its promotion of an architecture which strives to counter the placelessness and lack of identity which has characterised contemporary construction, seems as relevant today as it was when first written in 1983. It is particularly relevant to Irish architecture as we strive to establish a reputation in the first rank internationally, while retaining the identity and values which have characterised the best of the last decade s output. Professor Frampton will give an overview of his current thinking on regionalism in the context of globalised culture, particularly in relation to the phenomenon of the Starchitect as the guarantee of success. 1745 Open Discussion: Panel to be confirmed MONDAY 24TH OCTOBER 2011 6 Structured CPD Points 0845 Conference Registration Carlow Visual Centre 0900 Welcome Paul Keogh, President RIAI 0915 Opening Address Jimmy Deenihan, TD Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht 0930 Irish Architecture: Identity, Reputation and Values Keynote Speaker: Edward Jones, Dixon Jones Architects, London In 1971, the RIAI contacted its sister institutions in Denmark, Norway and the United Kingdom leading to Ireland s initial participation in the EC liaison committee of architects in 1972. Forty years later, Irish architecture is widely regarded as being in the first rank internationally. Edward Jones leading architect and member of the original Flying Circus at UCD in the seventies gives an overview of the period, and seeks to identify the values and qualities which have characterised the evolution of Irish architecture since our entry to the European Community almost half a decade ago. Draft Programme 1000 Open Discussion: Panel to be confirmed 1100 Coffee Break 1130 The Government Policy on Architecture 2009-15 Keynote Speaker: Martin Colreavy, Chief Advisor on Architecture Policy The Government Policy on Architecture 2009-15 is a milestone statement on the social, environmental and cultural importance of architecture, and the contribution of good design in the daily-life and well-being socially as a whole. The policy recognises the importance of architectural quality as a cornerstone of national policy on the built environment, and commits the State to ensuring the architectural quality of all buildings procured through State funding. The keynote speech by Martin Colreavy, Chief Advisor on Architecture Policy, will outline the state of progress on key actions in the policy, and the ensuing discussion will examine the role of the policy. 1200 Open Discussion: Panel to be confirmed 1300 Lunch 1400 Strategies for Survival, Renewal and Recovery Keynote Speaker: Conor Skehan The 2009 RIAI strategic review set out to conduct a wide-ranging review of the RIAI and the profession as a whole to review its strengths and weaknesses at this time of extraordinary economic, social and environmental uncertainty. Two years on, the profession continues to be decimated by declining workloads, a dearth of new commissions and a crippling cycle of belowcost fee tendering. With the construction sector now in decline for a fifteenth month, and no sign of change anytime soon, this round-table workshop session will explore what the profession can do to Ride out the Storm and what actions the Institute can progress under the 2010-13 Action Plan for survival, renewal and recovery in the years ahead. 1430 Open Discussion: Panel to be confirmed 1500 Coffee Break 1530 Round table discussions 1930 Conference Dinner / Presentation of Honorary Fellowships Chair: Paul Keogh Guest Speaker: Ruairí Quinn, TD, Minister for Education & Skills TUESDAY 25TH OCTOBER 2011 4 Structured CPD Points 0930 The Power of the Network Internationalisation Keynote Speaker: Kingsley Aikins, Kingsley Aikins Associates Government Policy is today strongly focused on the possibilities of an export-led recovery, in all sectors of the economy from pharmaceuticals to construction.
